...Hunger Games fanfic? I admit I thought of the Hunger Games during the PR business part of the book, but that was so brief and small compared to the role it had in THG. Everything else IW has in common with THG is just standard dystopia themes. Most other YA dystopian novels I've read are closer to being Hunger Games fanfic than Iron Widow.

Besides, the author shamelessly admits IW is *Darling in the Franxx* fanfic.

Anyway I give the book 9/10, couldn't put it down, give me all that anime tropey goodness but with (SPOILERS)

an actually canon OT3 of immoral characters who love each other dearly and want to kill everyone else, and I'm always a sucker for the "NOT Earth All Along" Twist.

Well, the patriarchy-smashing is there, and I do love me some "heroes" who are willing to actually do the unsavory things, so I enjoyed it, BUT I do agree that I wish there had been more female characters. It's always disappointing when female empowerment is central to the narrative and yet you can count positive interactions between women on one hand after a lawn mower accident. Show me women fighting FOR each other!

I just finished reading this and was a little underwhelmed, too. It sounded so cool and it was...kind of? But not nearly as cool as I hoped. I thought the mecha battles would be more of a thing, for starters.

My editor hasn't gotten around to reading it yet. (I do not have the cash to buy it alas. And pandemic keeps me from library. Yes, I know overdrive exists.) I am eagerly waiting her opinion when she does.

My one huge envy thing about this book is... the tik tok marketing. Like, I know she has her youtube (which has some good content too) but her tik tok marketing is genius. And I'm like "Dang, even if I had tik tok I don't think I could condense my books into "if you want furry mechas having a dbz fight," equivalent."

anyways, most marketing anymore is about hype because they want those sweet, sweet pre-sales (ugh.) I'm sorry it wasn't as good as you hoped. I don't trust that NYT Bestseller label at all given how I know things are weighted in the industry. Wish I had more to say about the secret really.

This, and Lindsay Ellis' offerings, have reinforced my hunch that it's not worth reading books by YouTube video essayists, no matter how much you like their web content.

Oof, same. I liked the main characters (well, not the Childhood Friend that much), but the rest was pretty derivative.

I'm glad they were happy with what they wrote but I was mostly bored.

Sports that require judging to figure out who won are always going to have problems and it seems like those problems tend to be much worse at the Olympic level for some reason. And I don't think there's a real solution, other than just getting rid of them from the Olympics entirely. IIRC that's pretty much what they're doing with boxing, it's not currently on the schedule for the 2028 summer games.

What fanfic reader is looking at comments and going "wow, there are just too many people taking an interest in this fic, I shouldn't read it"?

Who does this? Do you ever do that for fanfic yourself? This fellow writer sounds like the weird one that's too focused on statistics here, then they're assuming everyone else is like them for some reason
