I know nothing about DND but... I thought you made up your characters in DND? Doesn't that make everything playable?

Yeah, no. You can homebrew something, if your DM is open to homebrews, but D&D is a fairly structured game in many ways. Certainly as far as character creation goes.

Is this to make it more fair/so that people can't OP their characters? I always assumed it was a free-for-all lol.

NAYRT

It's sort of more overarching than just game balance in D&D. The idea is to give you a mechanical framework so that you can settle disputes, figure out what happens next, and be able to put your characters' abilities in a quantified structure.

And it also provides another layer of game mechanics. So it's not just a free-form narrative where you're collectively telling the story. It's a free-form narrative where you're collectively telling the story *and* there's a tactical combat element to the game and a resource management and exploration element.

You do make up your characters, but for game balance, there are lists of the races and classes that have the math and balancing already figured out, and you basically mix and match from there (and the personality and "flavor" is open for anything).

Ah so it's more like Mr. Potato Head making rather than freeform clay! Thank you! :)
