(Anonymous) 2022-03-09 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)Tumblr has also implemented the toggle switch needed in order to get their app back on the Apple Store, so the last round of Tumblr vs. its users drama (a second inept porn crackdown where Tumblr announced some commonly-used tags just wouldn't return content) seems to be behind us too. (Even after this kerfuffle, the reaction from users was largely, "Hello, we're a cockroach userbase. If you couldn't get us to leave with the last dozen bad user-experience updates, then you're not getting rid of us now. ♥")
And then with this Tumblr subscription thing: this is actually a step in the direction of a sustainable profit model like the one Dreamwidth has, which makes its relationship with its users much less dysfunctional than free social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Tumblr will still most likely be a money-loser, but at least now it gives users a way to financially support a site they find useful*, without relying (solely) on ad revenue and information-collection, which is GOOD. I know a lot of people who have spent over a decade on Tumblr and have posted and still post tons of media-heavy content, which takes money to host. They WANT to support a site that pulls so much weight for them; it's a voluntary donation. The ads don't even matter. (Also, in general, Tumblr's ads themselves, because they are so weird and surreal, have also become a Tumblr inside joke. So there's that too.)
In short, I think in terms of userbase culture and funding model, Tumblr is in the strongest position I've ever seen it. Also, wile I love AO3 and DW (and am staying forever on DW as my main fannish social site), they both lack an important feature that people now expect in web 2.0 sites, which is image and video hosting. Image hosting in particular is really important for many kinds of modern fannish activity and goes especially well with another feature of modern social media which is easily consumable and shareable content (scrolling through your feed is like eating bite-sized candy when you don't have time for anything more in-depth). DW has image hosting but it's clunky and very difficult to work with, and it still has a culture of actually hiding images behind cuts, which makes it easier to browse in a work-safe manner (old school forum culture which I appreciate). AO3 doesn't have image hosting and I understand why as it could easily bump the costs of hosting AO3 up several orders of magnitude and so has to be done carefully if at all. But yeah, Tumblr is happy to fill the gap here, and provides something unique in the fandom space. It doesn't surprise me people are willing to throw money at it for being a positive thing in their fannish life.
* Not counting Post+ or whatever, which SUCKED.
