Yeah, OP is kind of daft for an academic. But that's just fitting. Lots of academics are idiots outside of anything relating to their chosen field.

To be precise, it's not even really an aesthetic about "academia" per se even though that's in the name. It's more about being an undergraduate than post-graduate and going to an ancient school surrounded by rich elites. And I'm not even sure it's even that unrealistic when it comes to that.

Having been to one of those universities, yes it is unrealistic. Most people are just there to study, as anywhere.

It's not realistic but it's not that unrealistic either. At that point the fantasy is just having a lot of rich, cool friends who share the same aesthetic as you.
