I bet you're fun at parties.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know romanticizing one's lack of knowledge about the reality of a profession was required to be fun at parties, lmao. But seriously, actual academic work (even for undergrads) isn't like the weirdly flowery "dark academia" stuff. Like, I get it, the aesthetic of the thing is FANTASTIC, but like. That's not how it really is

(Anonymous) 2022-03-11 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Anti-intellectualism, how predictable.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-11 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't sound particularly intellectual if that's what you took away from this comment so I don't know why you're offended.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not wrong, OP! That and animes set in academic settings. It's definitely nauseatingly naive.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean...I could be overestimating the kids, but I think most people are aware it's not realistic. It's entirely possible to have the fantasy and have a more rational expectation at the same time.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Having worked in academia, you are overestimating the kids.

I think most people are aware that it's not the reality, and certainly anyone over the age of 18.

I think often the dark-academia aesthetic and all the associated cultural things are still an aesthetic and a vibe that people want to pursue even knowing that it's not actually what academia is like. A lot of people just like that style on its own merits. A lot of people.

There are probably some people who believe that somewhere, in some little part of the world, is some part of academia where things are actually like that. But that's not about realism; that's just about the wish to believe that the world, even one little corner of it, really works the way that you know in your heart that it ought to work. That somewhere, the stories are true and that if you just found that one perfect place, life could really be that way. It's the Fiddler's Green urge.

Realism is only one possible style of fiction, not the only or most important goal.

It's a fantasy.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Like the cozy coffee shop where you're going to meet-cute the love of your life or the cute cottage that you can totally afford and doesn't require serious renovation or upkeep. It's the glamorous life of the writer or photographer. It's winning the lottery and having zero problems afterwards. It's the dream vacation where everyone is happy all the time, there are no delays or hold-ups, you've got everything you need, and nothing goes wrong.

Re: It's a fantasy.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-10 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but all of that is also nauseating and calculated to make you unhappy with reality.

I really can't read this at all and what I *can* read makes no sense.
Maybe I need to go to bed.

Well, I can't talk about anyone but US kids but they 100% are not thinking this of most of the schools in the US. maybe the east coast schools who have secret clubs called skull and bones, which??? is an obvious reason to think ~dark academia~! That's not unreasonable! That post is literally saying it's a vibe!

Also lbr a lot of those post are from overworked grad students, they know what's dark about academia OP and it's much worse than their vibe posts.

this is very noit'sthekidswhoarewrong.gif

I am an overworked grad student in the US. That's why this ~aesthetique~ trend annoys me. Most of the blogs I see posting this shit are teenagers, which I know because they missed the internet safety 101 lesson and have all kinds of personal info on their about pages

Freaking this!

If it's good enough for Donna Tartt, it's good enough for me.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-11 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's a vibe, an aesthetic, and a fantasy. Hardly anybody thinks it's remotely realistic.

Re: If it's good enough for Donna Tartt, it's good enough for me.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-11 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, OP is kind of daft for an academic. But that's just fitting. Lots of academics are idiots outside of anything relating to their chosen field.

Re: If it's good enough for Donna Tartt, it's good enough for me.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-11 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
To be precise, it's not even really an aesthetic about "academia" per se even though that's in the name. It's more about being an undergraduate than post-graduate and going to an ancient school surrounded by rich elites. And I'm not even sure it's even that unrealistic when it comes to that.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-11 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know much about this aside from the superficial aesthetic/"window dressing" side (which is very Oxbridge/Ivy League/old European university). In my experience, yes, you will spend a lot of time in the library, but it will be an unromantic brutalist building from the 60s, you had to walk across campus in the snow to get there (passing two protests, some kind of fraternity-related shit, and a guy who wanted to give you a pamphlet on his extreme political/religeous/flat earther views on the way there) and a now you are trudging around the library in your damp snow boots and bulky winter coat (LOL you can't afford a tailored wool walking coat), and NOBODY IS WEARING TWEED.

Man, I know this isn't the point, but I LOVE Brutalist buildings. I personally find them more romantic than older architecture. If I attended a college wuth a Brutalist style library, I'd make up a few thoysand reasons to be there on a daily basis.

(That said, the library at my alma mater was built some time in the late 90s. The university is young even by US standards.)

It's an idealized ~aesthetic~, not what they imagine actual real everyday academia to be like. Just like cottage core is not meant to be a realistic depiction of off grid cottage living.

Speaking of aesthetics, I pity anyone who has to watch you do any academic presentations if this is what you consider readable.
