Tropes You Love

What are your favorite tropes? Especially ones that people tend to be judgmental about

Sacrifice, either heroes sacrificing themselves in some way for others or other characters choosing to sacrifice themselves in some way to give the hero a chance to win.

Hurt/comfort, I love both elements equally.

Long-term relationships/bonds. Either friendships to romance or just characters who have been together so long they know each other completely.

Tragic villains. Complex villains. Just full on evil villains without any or very much good. Villains who were once heroes. Villains who have a backstory with their hero.

Villain x villain ships and villain x hero ships.

Redemption stories. If done well, they get me every time.

A lot of mentor figure tropes.

Happy characters, whether heroes or villains. Just, characters that take a joy in what they do and aren't angsty about it. They just love life.

+1

My favorite thing in hero/villain ships is when the villain says, "we're not so different, you and I" and is completely right about that.

Not because I approve of it, or the history behind it, but I will always love old (keyword being old) movies which use the mighty white hunter trope. I know it is wrong, but as long as it is just old movies, then I am fine treating it as a guilty pleasure.

I also love those golden age of Hollywood era gorgeous mediaeval costume dramas.

Self-sacrifice, hurt/comfort, reincarnation (especially where the ship always finds each other), unhappy endings, and I'm not sure what to call a couple of them.

- I have jokingly referred to "I stab you means I love you" because so many of my fave games have moments where someone is forced to kill their lover (or someone who I think should be their lover, hahah) or family member. The Ivalice games are FULL of this stuff.

-- Similarly, family at odds and having to fight each other. Brothers on opposite sides of a conflict, or parent/child on opposite sides of a conflict. I thought this might just be an Ivalice thing too until I saw it happen a couple times in TV shows and went !! just as hard.

-- Also kind of related, but very specific: "you are not my dead lover but you are identical to my dead lover and now you are dying in my arms". I have seen this several times now and ohhhh my.

- My ex and I also used to joke about the term "old friend" because we were pretty much willing to ship any two characters who called each other that.

#1 - couple thrown together in shared hotel bed or huddle for warmth in a remote cabin situation, particularly if they're having trouble communicating or are angry at one another prior. I will read the hell out of these fics.

#2 - fake married/couple for subterfuge reasons (investigating a case, etc.) Bless X-Files for giving us this in canon in the Arcadia episode + bonus fish out of water elements.

#3 - creature + human, in the case of mercreatures or selkies or whatever, they don't have to turn human but it's better if they can.

I guess these are both tropes and...kinks?

Hurt/Comfort, specifically if it's a strong character that gets hurt/sick and a weaker one has to take care of them.

A monster/evil character who befriends a child.

Grey and Gray morality. I like it when conflicts aren't clear cut and black and white, and you don't know which side is "good" or which one is "evil."

Dysfunctional people in dysfunctional relationships leading dysfunctional lives/trying to live normal lives.

If it's identity porn with a royal arranged marriage, I will read it. No, I wasn't influenced by Sleeping Beauty as a child, why do you ask?

Pretty much all of the ones listed already, but also Mistaken for Dead, where either one character or everyone assumes Character A died and is mourning for them, but guess what? (Actually, I think I like reunions in general. I just skimmed a fic that's about 60,000 words long so I could read the return of a long-lost relative in the last few chapters.)
