Sacrifice, either heroes sacrificing themselves in some way for others or other characters choosing to sacrifice themselves in some way to give the hero a chance to win.

Hurt/comfort, I love both elements equally.

Long-term relationships/bonds. Either friendships to romance or just characters who have been together so long they know each other completely.

Tragic villains. Complex villains. Just full on evil villains without any or very much good. Villains who were once heroes. Villains who have a backstory with their hero.

Villain x villain ships and villain x hero ships.

Redemption stories. If done well, they get me every time.

A lot of mentor figure tropes.

Happy characters, whether heroes or villains. Just, characters that take a joy in what they do and aren't angsty about it. They just love life.

My favorite thing in hero/villain ships is when the villain says, "we're not so different, you and I" and is completely right about that.
