Hm... I guess as a counterpoint, I'm been around F!S to some degree or another since its LJ days and I actually find the commenters more chill and friendly/open to discussion than when F!S was bigger and more crowded. Also, the comm seems more earnest and less into trolling. And I admire and respect people who are willing to post here under their username from week to week. Me, I would hate if people could track my takes from week to week. I imagine I would eventually post enough bad takes that people would find me irritating and ignore the times when my takes are actually good and interesting because I've exhausted their patience with me.

Unless this secret is talking about anonymous commenters? I just realized it didn't actually specify. But yeah, in any case, maybe I'm missing something (I don't usually check the comments unless a secret draws me) but I'm mostly happy with the culture of this comm whenever I do check the comments.

Same. Back in the LJ days, we had some real... characters, let's say, song the regulars. Compared to those days, the comm is pretty chill nowadays.

I mean, at one point during the LJ days, fanficrants anon (ffr_rants? ffr_anon? Whatever it was called) decided that F!S was too wanky. Fanficrants anon!

honesstly, same. I've been here forever and seen the roller coaster, and right now I genuinely don't see what OP is talking about. there's probably fewer jerks than there used to be, most folks are pretty chill unless there's a topic we feel like flogging to death for the nth time because someone just had to go and make a secret about this again.

there's definitely not a cadre or a concerted effort, at least. Being here daily, you see so much quiet boredom most days. OP if you keep seeing assholes everywhere, maybe it's the specific types of discussions you're reading that concentrates your experience into certain small boxes.

You know what they say about if you can't see the jerk?

Wow, congrats. AYRT isn't the type of person this secret is talking about; it's you. A reasonable response to a secret is posted, and you smugly accuse AYRT of being a jerk, but indirectly, because you're soooo clever.

This.

Agreed on the quiet boredom. Ugh, I miss the old days.

I find most people to be pretty laid-back, with a few assholes, and the laid-back people are such a contrast that the assholes really stand out. That said, I still get very crabby when some little twit tries to police how other people are allowed to do fandom.
