Buying merch and going to first-night showings of theatrical anime releases still puts you in the upper echelons of anime fandom, though

I dunno, speaking as someone who does go to cons and does cosplay, neither of those things seem extraordinarily weeby to me, unless the house is FULL of anime merch. Admittedly, my scale might be slightly skewed since, as noted, I do go to cons and cosplay. ;)

Or is "weeb" intentionally a lighter version of "otaku"? I had been going with the assumption they meant approximately the same thing.

If you aren't aware, "weeb" is a shortening of "weeaboo". "Weeaboo" was the output of a particular mid-2000s website's word-replacement filter, with the input word being "Wapanese". As you might guess, "Wapanese" comes from smooshing together "white Japanese", and was specifically white-person-cringily-obessesed-with-Japan and super derogatory.

With the time since then, I think "weeb" has softened quite a bit in use, but that might depend on where in the internet you operate.
