Alas. more for me? I love open world.

Thing is...it's been the rote response to "lesser" gamers that "not all games are for everybody" which is actually, on its face, true. It's okay to not like a genre of games. I can't do FPS at all, and that's okay. It's a kick in the teeth when there's a sudden glut of the genre you can't take, and it feels like game devs are spiting you in particular by pushing out 259734 games in that genre all at once but...give it time, OP. The open world phase will pass and we'll be back to platformers or multiplayer or FPS or MMO again very soon. Game dev goes in phases a lot faster than other media and it won't be long before people like me are thirsting for more open world and you're rolling in the game genre that works best for you.

Oh hey, I could have written this! I can't do FPS and love open world, but it's true that things go in feast or famine - right now open world is in, but it won't be long until some other genre is suddenly the greatest ever and everyone emulates that.

It seems to me like the trend is for all of these things to just roll together into one macrogenre where most or all super-big-ticket games are open world class-based shooters with multiplayer and MMO elements, or whatever

I don't even think there are that many open world games? I think it just FEELS like a lot because there really weren't that many before. And if you don't like them, of course you're going to notice them.
