If it's something you want to be more into now, and you don't mind being spoiled, I suggest walkthroughs when available. If you feel like that's cheating, sometimes really good ones have a little table of contents, so you can pick something to do and go from there. It might not work for you, but having a concrete list of option makes choosing a little easier I think.

Alas. more for me? I love open world.

Thing is...it's been the rote response to "lesser" gamers that "not all games are for everybody" which is actually, on its face, true. It's okay to not like a genre of games. I can't do FPS at all, and that's okay. It's a kick in the teeth when there's a sudden glut of the genre you can't take, and it feels like game devs are spiting you in particular by pushing out 259734 games in that genre all at once but...give it time, OP. The open world phase will pass and we'll be back to platformers or multiplayer or FPS or MMO again very soon. Game dev goes in phases a lot faster than other media and it won't be long before people like me are thirsting for more open world and you're rolling in the game genre that works best for you.

Oh hey, I could have written this! I can't do FPS and love open world, but it's true that things go in feast or famine - right now open world is in, but it won't be long until some other genre is suddenly the greatest ever and everyone emulates that.

It seems to me like the trend is for all of these things to just roll together into one macrogenre where most or all super-big-ticket games are open world class-based shooters with multiplayer and MMO elements, or whatever

I don't even think there are that many open world games? I think it just FEELS like a lot because there really weren't that many before. And if you don't like them, of course you're going to notice them.

Yeah, I haven't finished a single open world game I started because I always wander off and do random stuff until I've forgotten what the main objective was and by that point I don't even really care anymore and just drop it.
Or I start modding stuff out of boredom and break the game haha.

I’ve been hitting a wall with open world games lately, too! Sometimes it’s as mentioned - being overwhelmed by choice or going so far away from the main storyline (usually trying to accomplish something that becomes much easier if you completed more of the main quest) that I get lost trying to get back into it. Other times if there’s a grind involved it catches up to me, especially if it’s related to something I want to try or honestly need to do irl (tool and clothing repair, cooking experiments…). But the first few hours before then I do still get madly immersed.

Youve got to remember that it's all slight variations of the same 5 quests, OP. This makes the game admittedly less exciting, but manageable.
Also, holy cow- companies are still trying to get MMOs started in the year of our Lord? It ain't the aughties no more, most of these tank in under two years! Yeesh.

That's what I love about Wide Open Sandbox worlds. I love just running around, exploring, and doing random missions and quests, whenever I feel like doing them.

Me too, OP, me too. Except I really really want to get back to RDR2 (which I've started and given up on twice in the past few years, mostly because I also happen to suck at it). I feel like I'd love it if I just worked at it more. I got the strategy guide and everything... but now I'm overwhelmed by the strategy guide, too :(

[personal profile] hey_hey_hey 2022-03-28 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
Why would anyone need a strategy guide for RDR2? Make sure he eats a couple of times a day, keep the guns clean and brush your horse. What else is there to strategize?

I'm waiting for a return to side scrolling platform games, personally.

+1 Open world games feel so shallow to me. Like someone else said, it's basically the same five quests rinse and repeat, but I want more narrative structure. How can a game consistently build interest and meaning into a story line if there's no telling what a player will do and in what order?

Horizon Forbidden West was my latest disappointment. I loved the first game so much.

HFW is amazing. I'm sorry you don't appreciate art.

Yeah, I especially loved the incredibly stupid zag at the end to set up another cliffhanger with a disappointing final boss that got lost on the way to Kingdom Hearts 8.whatever.

The world is about to end, everything depends on me getting Gaia rebuilt first, why the fuck would I take time out of my busy schedule to go hunt down one specific longleg to get a part so a kid can play some music?
