Sorry to keep bitching about this, but argh. One of my chickens is either egg bound or has peritonitis or some other blockage that means she can't poop much and is barely eating, her crop is packed, and she's waddling in pain.

My vet for the past five or so years wasn't a bird expert, but she kept chickens, and prior to working with the public she worked for some government agency or something that dealt with wild birds (and apparently had to euthanize a ton of wild ducks that were fed so much bread by clueless people their feathers grew in wrong from protein deficiency and they couldn't fly. If you have to feed wild ducks give them lettuce or thawed frozen peas, guys.)

Anyway, my vet just switched to another practice a couple hours away by public transit--I can't drive. And I don't know if her new boss will let her treat chickens.

I finally found a vet within walking --a bit over a mile each way-- distance that will treat birds, and made an appointment for Monday afternoon, which means missing a day of work.

They're already twice as expensive as my old vet and I have property taxes to pay, so even though I feel super guilty I didn't opt to pay emergency rates to be seen sooner, since if it's peritonitis or she needs surgery I dunno if I can afford it and same day or weekend surcharges. I don't even know if I can afford surgery without extra charges; my old vet was super cheap and also knocked hundreds off my bills sometimes, and I've still spent $600 at a time for surgery and meds.

They also took my card info and will charge a same day cancellation fee of $65 even if I cancel on Sunday since they're closed then. They'll only waive it if she dies before the appointment.

I tried to give her a bath today since sometimes that helps. It's kind of triggering for me since the first time I bathed a hen (who had been raised for meat but spared by her owner's kids begging to save their favorites, and a mutual friend gave them to me) she was terrified of people and handling, and crawling with parasites, and she had a heart attack and died in my arms.

My sick hen doesn't enjoy being picked up or handled, but she doesn't think of me as a predator, she thinks of me as a mealworm dispenser.

And apparently she may be ill and in pain but having a spray of warm water aimed at her ass wasn't worth a handful of sunflower seeds, and she jumped out of the sink and landed on the floor. I hope she didn't injure herself on top of everything else. I'll try again tomorrow, if she makes it.

crossing my fingers that your hen will be ok! Sick pets are really not nice :(

I hope your bird makes it and will be OK.
