I think it's as much about the tastes of the audience and the decisions being made by the publishing companies. I think a lot of that stuff is just what people are looking for and / or what publishing companies think people are looking for, rather than being a product of the ages and life experiences of authors.

It is a shame though.

I guess this is true if you get your book recs from fandom twitter, which, yes, is full of stupid books written by barely-adults for other barely-adults with social media brainrot.

If you get your book recs from reviews in newspapers and literary magazines, turns out there are still plenty of books by and for adults being written, published and read.

As a kid, I remember reading the "About the Author" blurbs at the back of my favorite books, and seeing several career paths and life events listed, which always solidified for me that there was no timeline on becoming an author. It made publishing not feel so urgent to me, because hell, if I published right out of college, there would have been nothing fun in my blurb!

I mean, I genuinely think books which have that type of singular depth have less to do with maturity and more to do with depth of perspective. You absolutely can get that young, but you usually don't because the younger you are then more it has to be an active decision.

That said you're making a truly wild induction. You haven't connected with many books over a certain year and therefore the industry no longer fosters certain types of authors. The level of assumption here is large. May it bear out? Perhaps. But it doesn't make me think you're approaching this with any level of groundedness, rather ironically.

I feel you, OP. Honestly I've had MUCH better luck reading new books in foreign languages (or translations) and, ofc, avoiding anything hyped, "genre" or otherwise. And I say this as someone who reads a lot of SFF! IMO that area of literature in particular has suffered in the wake of Whedon quippiness, and now that people who loved Buffy are the ones writing new SFF books it continues, exacerbated by social media brain rot and the need to make things into franchises and brands that can churn out Funko Pops and smartphone cases and video games. (If they're not serving as objects thru which a huge audience can maintain a parasocial relationship with a celebrity they already like.)

Other people are free to like what they like, and I recognize this is also about my changing relationship to books and my changing awareness of the world as I age, since some of my complaints are not at all recent developments...

...but at the same time when I read a book like Parable of the Sower, I have to wonder... how would it have turned out today? Would the publishing process treat it like The Broken Earth because of the heavy themes and complex topics, or would it get treated like The Hunger Games because the protagonist happens to be a teenager?

But I don’t know if the majority of these fangirls and fanboys of Jensen/SPN will actually be all that shocked at the graphic-ness of The Boys, so I disagree with with you there OP. The fact that it’s a very graphic superhero deconstruction(but not nearly as graphic in the sex and violence as the comics, although that’s a low bar) is one of the things pretty much everyone knows about it, even people who haven’t seen it. Hell, the graphic content of The Boys is treated as a selling points by some, along with the fact that it’s a lot better than that first description sounds. Invincible is similar in that regard in that some people come for the violence and stay for the well told story and well-written characters. While I come for the story and characters of both shows, and close my eyes at the violence like the wimpy and squeamish grown adult I am.

And while SPN is nowhere near as bad, it could get surprisingly brutal for a show of it’s demographic and timeslot. Not saying that will prepare anyone for The Boys graphic content, but I’m sure some of these SPN/Ackles fans can handle it.

But some can’t, and if they somehow go into The Boys without knowing anything about what they’re about to see, it will be just as funny as you say. But I’ll also feel bad for them and hope they learn to do a little research next time before blindly watching everything their fave is in.

I could be wrong, but I think the artist(Shinya Komi) might have made porn, or at least pornographic images of some of the characters of Ex-Arm and Ex-Vita? And if I am wrong, there’s at least definitely hentai and +18 art made of his work somewhere. It’s better than nothing I guess, considering the actual writer of Ex-Arm sucks out loud.

People think the anime had any potential to be good if it wasn’t animated in terrible CG, and it’s like, no? The story was already terrible. The manga was only better because it had a talented artist to give pretty backgrounds and good eye candy.

It's an awesome movie. And you don't have to tell people all the details of the 'why', maybe just vague it up with 'family relationships' or something.

Watched that movie way back in the day, read the book...it is just really excellent.
