Look, I get that the opioid crisis is bad, but it shouldn't be this difficult for people who actually need them to get them.

Dallas is just, it is almost impossible to get them here. My neurologist flat out refuses to give me a tramadol prescription for my migraines in spite of it being proven to work for the severe ones when nothing else will and in spite of my three previous neurologists in previous homes being fine with prescribing it.

And my spine doctor only prescribed tramadol after taking a urine test. And he said he was going to prescribe 45, only actually gave me 20, and now won't refill (I assume, I sent in the refill on Tuesday, left a portal message yesterday, and haven't heard a thing).

I'm still not sleeping well due to the pain level, and it is going to be a miserable weekend. Just so frustrated.

The amount of infantilization disabled people receive is depressing.

Yup. I have a friend who deals with chronic pain, and I can't even imagine having to deal with pain all the time, every day, forever and not being able to get the meds you need.

Autistic person here and GODS YES.

It gets to the point where I feel most free in places like online where I can be the adult I am and not play the "innocent role"

You'd be shocked how often even well meaning people assumed things about me like that I didn't swear.

Re: Vent thread

Ugh, I'm sorry. Tramadol is the only thing that works for me (and codeine). Oxy etc. don't do shit.

Can you ask them to refer you to a pain management specialist? Maybe botox injections can help, but either way, at least there they'll give you decent drugs (and occasional drug tests to make sure you're taking as prescribed, which is annoying but okay).

I've thought about finding another neurologist, since I'm no longer on an HMO and don't need a primary doctor referral. But I'm scared I'll be seen as drug seeking.

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2022-04-02 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I think I've mentioned this to you before, but unfortunately, a lot of doctors and pharmacists (the smart ones, anyway) are wary because they've encountered a LOT of people abusing opioids and every single last one of them also claims to be a person who is legitimately in pain. It can be difficult to tell apart the people who are really suffering and the people who are faking, and when the punishment is the loss of your license and therefore livelihood plus possible jail time, people tend to err on the side of caution. A few things that set off the radar:

* asking for a specific frequently abused drug, such as Tramadol. It sucks that Tramadol is the only thing that works for your migraines, but unfortunately, a lot of people who want drugs for recreational purposes lie and say that ONLY such-and-such drug works for them, which is why they can't accept anything other than that very specific drug.

* Each state has strict laws about controlled substances like Tramadol, and there are rules for how much can be prescribed as well as how often they can be refilled. I don't know what Texas laws are, but your doctor and/or pharmacists' hands might be tied and they can't just give you over a certain amount of controlled substances. It might not necessarily be about "infantilization" as someone else mentioned.

* You don't mention it here, but IIRC in the past you've mentioned going to different drug stores to try and get your painkillers when you were refused at one location. I cautioned you then that this is exactly the sort of that sets off pharmacist's alarm bells because it looks like drug seeking behavior. People who abuse opioids shop around doctors and pharmacists because they're looking for someone who will either make a mistake or just give in to pressure. Pharmacy staff see people on a daily basis who call or come in to argue about refills, demand more drugs, claim they've been shorted, threaten them with physical harm and other verbal abuse because they won't (and sometimes it's "can't", legally) hand over the drugs, etc. etc. They're on super high alert for anything that even remotely looks like this. The trouble is that someone who wants opioids to fuel their drug habit and someone who wants opioids because they're in a lot of pain are going to exhibit some of the same angry, frustrated, desperate behaviors and that's what makes it hard to tell them apart.

It sucks and it's frustrating as hell, I'm sure. All I can recommend is building a good long term relationship with ONE doctor and ONE pharmacy location and doing your best to stay calm when interacting with people.

This is one of the few good things about living in Florida, in that getting these prescriptions isn’t hard when you see a pain specialist. For now. Who knows when even that will be done away with in the guise of “helping opioid addiction”. I don’t have an opioid addiction, I have chronic pain, and everyone shouldn’t have to suffer because some people are addicts. Not that I don’t sympathize with addicts, addiction is a genuine disease. But I hate how government restrictions on pain medication since the war on opioids started treats everyone taking pain medication like they’re all addicts.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, but the lengths some male members of fandom will go to to justify and/or rationalise away rape is truly disturbing.

I was used as a distant friend's emotional punching bag this evening. Super fun. We haven't talked in months, she contacted me about making plans and when I told her I had already started making plans, she basically unloaded everything in her arsenal on me for an hour until I was literally shaking.

And then she found someone else to go with her and laughed it off while I had to pace my living room with my heart beating out of my chest from being put through the crucible.

Sorry to keep bitching about this, but argh. One of my chickens is either egg bound or has peritonitis or some other blockage that means she can't poop much and is barely eating, her crop is packed, and she's waddling in pain.

My vet for the past five or so years wasn't a bird expert, but she kept chickens, and prior to working with the public she worked for some government agency or something that dealt with wild birds (and apparently had to euthanize a ton of wild ducks that were fed so much bread by clueless people their feathers grew in wrong from protein deficiency and they couldn't fly. If you have to feed wild ducks give them lettuce or thawed frozen peas, guys.)

Anyway, my vet just switched to another practice a couple hours away by public transit--I can't drive. And I don't know if her new boss will let her treat chickens.

I finally found a vet within walking --a bit over a mile each way-- distance that will treat birds, and made an appointment for Monday afternoon, which means missing a day of work.

They're already twice as expensive as my old vet and I have property taxes to pay, so even though I feel super guilty I didn't opt to pay emergency rates to be seen sooner, since if it's peritonitis or she needs surgery I dunno if I can afford it and same day or weekend surcharges. I don't even know if I can afford surgery without extra charges; my old vet was super cheap and also knocked hundreds off my bills sometimes, and I've still spent $600 at a time for surgery and meds.

They also took my card info and will charge a same day cancellation fee of $65 even if I cancel on Sunday since they're closed then. They'll only waive it if she dies before the appointment.

I tried to give her a bath today since sometimes that helps. It's kind of triggering for me since the first time I bathed a hen (who had been raised for meat but spared by her owner's kids begging to save their favorites, and a mutual friend gave them to me) she was terrified of people and handling, and crawling with parasites, and she had a heart attack and died in my arms.

My sick hen doesn't enjoy being picked up or handled, but she doesn't think of me as a predator, she thinks of me as a mealworm dispenser.

And apparently she may be ill and in pain but having a spray of warm water aimed at her ass wasn't worth a handful of sunflower seeds, and she jumped out of the sink and landed on the floor. I hope she didn't injure herself on top of everything else. I'll try again tomorrow, if she makes it.

Writing this and then going to bed. I hope.

I love my cat, he is the sweetest cat, but sometimes he is SO DUMB and I do not understand him. He refuses to drink out of his water bowl no matter where I put it, and instead will act like he's dying of thirst until I let him in to drink from one of the bunnies' bowls. I have two water dishes in a couple rooms just so he doesn't drink it all before they get any.

And it's not the thing people have suggested that it's too close to his food/litter or he sees other animals drinking it so he knows it's clean. Other things he drinks from excitedly even though there is a full bowl of water nearby:

- puddles on the floor when I've tracked in melting snow
- the bathtub if I've just turned it on to fill the water bowls with water and there's a little bit still around the drain
- the toilet WHILE I AM ACTUALLY USING IT

I even bought him one of those fancy circulating water bowls in hopes that moving water would catch his interest away from all these other things. He used it for like a day and then went back to stealing the bunnies' water and leaping into the bathtub.

So tonight I was watering plants, overwatered, and I wound up with a puddle of dirty water on the floor in one of the bunny rooms. Of course he immediately went after it, but it's on the side of the augmented gate I rigged up to keep one of the bunnies in his area, so I took the cat out and put the gate back in place. Still feeling wonky from vaccine so I didn't feel like wiping it up. It'd be dry by morning.

Ever since, the cat has been jumping INTO the gate (not over it, he can't jump that high), knocking it over, and immediately running to the puddle to drink from it. Which means I have to remove him from the dirty water, put him on the other side of the gate, stand it upright and fix it back in its spot.

After doing this three times I finally decided to wipe up the puddle. He's STILL trying to get in there and drink the dirty water that is no longer there. I washed out his circulating water bowl, he took a couple laps and tried to knock over the gate again.

Finally I just intentionally spilled some water out of his newly cleaned and refilled bowl onto the floor next to it. ...He drank that excitedly. ...And then went to try to knock over the gate again.

I am tired and not feeling well and as much as part of me wants to laugh at the ridiculousness I just do not have the spoons for this tonight and want him to just drink the clean water I have provided him. Or if he absolutely can't drink that for some reason, drink the clean water he has access to in the bunny areas. Just stop knocking over the gate to drink dirty water. Please, cat. I feel like crap and just want to lie down.

Sorry you're not feeling well, hope you feel better soon.

You weren't asking for advice and I'm sure you've tried this, but what happens if you put a bunch of water bowls everywhere you can fit them?

Is your cat's bowl a different material to your bunnies' bowls? It might be that. I'm not sure whether most can taste it, but different materials give drinking water a different taste. I have a crazy sensitive sense of taste and I can't stand water out of metal vessels. As cats have much more attuned senses, just wondering if it's a material difference making him prefer the bunnies' bowls?
