Writing this and then going to bed. I hope.

I love my cat, he is the sweetest cat, but sometimes he is SO DUMB and I do not understand him. He refuses to drink out of his water bowl no matter where I put it, and instead will act like he's dying of thirst until I let him in to drink from one of the bunnies' bowls. I have two water dishes in a couple rooms just so he doesn't drink it all before they get any.

And it's not the thing people have suggested that it's too close to his food/litter or he sees other animals drinking it so he knows it's clean. Other things he drinks from excitedly even though there is a full bowl of water nearby:

- puddles on the floor when I've tracked in melting snow
- the bathtub if I've just turned it on to fill the water bowls with water and there's a little bit still around the drain
- the toilet WHILE I AM ACTUALLY USING IT

I even bought him one of those fancy circulating water bowls in hopes that moving water would catch his interest away from all these other things. He used it for like a day and then went back to stealing the bunnies' water and leaping into the bathtub.

So tonight I was watering plants, overwatered, and I wound up with a puddle of dirty water on the floor in one of the bunny rooms. Of course he immediately went after it, but it's on the side of the augmented gate I rigged up to keep one of the bunnies in his area, so I took the cat out and put the gate back in place. Still feeling wonky from vaccine so I didn't feel like wiping it up. It'd be dry by morning.

Ever since, the cat has been jumping INTO the gate (not over it, he can't jump that high), knocking it over, and immediately running to the puddle to drink from it. Which means I have to remove him from the dirty water, put him on the other side of the gate, stand it upright and fix it back in its spot.

After doing this three times I finally decided to wipe up the puddle. He's STILL trying to get in there and drink the dirty water that is no longer there. I washed out his circulating water bowl, he took a couple laps and tried to knock over the gate again.

Finally I just intentionally spilled some water out of his newly cleaned and refilled bowl onto the floor next to it. ...He drank that excitedly. ...And then went to try to knock over the gate again.

I am tired and not feeling well and as much as part of me wants to laugh at the ridiculousness I just do not have the spoons for this tonight and want him to just drink the clean water I have provided him. Or if he absolutely can't drink that for some reason, drink the clean water he has access to in the bunny areas. Just stop knocking over the gate to drink dirty water. Please, cat. I feel like crap and just want to lie down.

Sorry you're not feeling well, hope you feel better soon.

You weren't asking for advice and I'm sure you've tried this, but what happens if you put a bunch of water bowls everywhere you can fit them?

He ignores the ones he has 24/7 access to and sits by the gate/door to an area he doesn't have 24/7 access to and whines until I let him into that area, then gulps down someone else's water because he hasn't drunk any of the readily available water for hours. :P

Is your cat's bowl a different material to your bunnies' bowls? It might be that. I'm not sure whether most can taste it, but different materials give drinking water a different taste. I have a crazy sensitive sense of taste and I can't stand water out of metal vessels. As cats have much more attuned senses, just wondering if it's a material difference making him prefer the bunnies' bowls?

Or the cat is just being a contrary asshole. Because it is a cat.

Contrary yes, asshole no. He is the sweetest cat, if very very neurotic.

Weird counterpoint to this, since he is the sweetest cat, back when we had multiple cats, if they showed the slightest sign of aggression towards him about food (not even aggression really, they'd just stop eating and look at him and he'd cower), he just wouldn't eat. Would sit there looking sad as they ate all the food and left none for him. Wouldn't assert himself at all, even as he started losing weight.

He got so skinny on a few occasions that I would have to take him to a room and close a door so he couldn't see any other cats and he knew that the food I was offering him was REALLY FOR HIM, and like... hold a can of wet food up to his mouth while petting him to reassure him that I was not angry with him for eating the food. I would have to do this a few times a day until he got back up to normal weight. :P

Kind of a pain in the butt, but he purrs constantly when he's near me and didn't stop purring even while eating so he was making the funniest noises, like "brrrrOMbrrrOMbrrrOM". ;)

I am not exaggerating when I say I have tried at least half a dozen (probably upwards of ten over the many years since we adopted this cat) different bowls. Metal, plastic, ceramic. Sometimes I have literally told him "okay you want to drink water from this bowl?" and switched whichever of the bunnies' bowls he was drinking out of and the one in an area he had 24/7 access to and was ignoring. He then ignores the one he had been drinking out of in the bunnies' area, and constantly whines to be let into the bunnies' area so he can drink out of the bowl he'd been ignoring when it was, say, in the kitchen.

My ex used to joke that he only drinks bunny water because it tastes like bunny kisses. Which is fair. Except for the thing where... I mean...

Last night to get to a mud puddle, he literally went right past two bunnies' bowls that he normally would drink from if I let him in - one ceramic, one plastic - but he didn't want to drink from those anymore. Just the mud puddle. Badly enough to knock stuff down RIGHT NEXT TO one of the bunny bowls he had been happily drinking from even earlier in the evening.

(Side note, I am with you on the different materials myself. I love Diet Coke but when they switched to plastic bottles I had to start pouring them into a glass, metal, or paper vessel to drink because straight out of plastic it tastes off - and it definitely tastes different in each of those other kinds of cups, but not so off-putting. :P)
