I find it tedious this idea that we're supposed to be conscious and/or horrified of power imbalances in every instance it's happening. For fuck's sake there's a long tradition of stories where humble peasants fall in love with royalty or gods or whatever. Power =! abuse.

Right? Being aware of potential problems is one thing, but it's not in and of itself a bad thing. In some cases, it's even a bonus.

Or I mean, even when power = abuse, why should we be horrified about it? Sometimes royalty/gods/etc flexing and exerting their power over someone that's not in a position to say no is hot. There shouldn't be shame or horror in finding that hot. It's in fiction for a reason.

As the comm's resident Starker shipper, I will say that there are some pairings where, personally, I could never ignore the power imbalance, and also would never want to, because ignoring the power imbalance would mean basically making the entire ship feel extremely generic. Starker is very much case in point.

However, there are plenty of pairings where acknowledging the power imbalance is a lot more take-it-or-leave-it for me, and even some cases of subtle power imbalance where I'd prefer it to be largely ignored.

Same here, OP.

When you say "ignore" do you mean a) the power imbalance is never actually "used" in that both partners are given relatively the same autonomy, b) the power imbalance is "used" but the show never thinks it's a problem/does think it is evidence of a great romance, c) it's played for laughs or irony or horror or d) some other option. Because I can ignore 1 and sometimes 3, but 2 is much harder for me.

This is a very good point, and I feel the same way.

When someone says a ship is problematic because of a power imbalance my reaction is more or less "Aw how cute, baby just learned the term 'power imbalance' and is trying to use it in a sentence to show how grown up they are."

Awww baby just discovered edgy condescension :')

And they’re not very good at it either, aww! :)

So what you’re saying is you’re an obnoxious asshole that thinks they’re above everyone else when they’re clearly not? Got it.

I guess I might be bitter too if people I thought of as babies were smarter than me.
