I think it all depends on where you are in fandom. I don't see much entitlement in my circles other than 'can we please have non-cliche representation of minorities/LGBTQ'.

That's also entitlement though, because most of it is "My headcanon about this character being a lesbian based on the fact that she smiled at another girl one time never became canon, so I'm going to call out the creator for their homophobia."

Um...no? It actually isn't. It's discussions about how there should be more diversity and inclusivity in movies and tv, and 'ship talk, and whatnot. It's not people going off on anyone as a homophobe. It's not even directed *at* the creator, other than in general.

Like I said - my fandom circles are pretty different, apparently.

You’re 100% correct. AYRT’s reading of your comment was bad.

No, it wasn't bad. I know what they meant, but my experience with how fans react to representation in fandom has been astonishingly different from theirs.

If you knew what they meant, then how did you think what they were talking about was entitlement? I didn’t say you misread their comment, just that your reading of the intent of their comment was bad. Hence it was a bad reading. And while you seem reasonable, and I don’t think you’re acting in bad faith, I still think your reading of tabaqui’s comment was bad. Because you kind of framed your experience as the default experience when dealing with LGBTQ+ people wanting representation that’s not stereotypical to be automatically the same as people demanding from creators that their ships be made canon or calling the creators homophobes for not doing so. You were probably implying that by accident, and a lot of bad readings are accidental and with no harm meant more than they’re willful and spiteful ime.

This is all my opinion, and I’m not trying to gaslight you on what your actual intention was for your own replies. I’m just going off on how it looks to me, and equating tabaqui and other people to certain shippers demanding things of creators just seems like a bad reading of tabaqui’s comment.

NAYRT

I mean, I think they're maybe referring to fans speaking to creators? Not necessarily to other fan creators, but to the actual show runners or whoever?

I don't think it's entitlement when I see a show that finally has X minority and they're depicted by what are essentially stereotypes (there's nothing being done to subvert those stereotypes, acknowledge/satirize the fact they're playing into those stereotypes-- which vines with its own issues and isn't often done right). Like, am I asking for too much to see somebody like me/my friends/family/community who has more dimensions than [stereotypical qualities historically relied upon]?

Granted, I can't answer for tabaqui, but in my own experience it was this lack that led me to fandom in the first place! I don't think I'm being entitled when all I'm asking for is to not be made into a stereotype/played into particular tropes. And if it is entitlement, well what can I do? I do support creators who get greenlit to begin with, and hopefully that makes the people with money realize better stories will result in more profit, but I'm not holding my breath. Again, this is specifically referring to canon not fandom spaces, in which people gripe and whatever they want. So if you want to see that head canon, you can make it happen.

It's why I came to fandom, too; just sick of all the m/f stuff forever being shoved in my face, and all the f/f and m/m stuff ending in sadness and misery or never really happening (like LGBTQ people are all neuter or something), or being treated like a joke or a Very Special Episode. At least fandom, with all its flaws, celebrates and gives life to LGBTQ headspace, experiences, emotions, relationships, issues and quirks.

This all the way!!

No it’s not, and the type of thing you’re talking about is completely different than what tabaqui is talking about. It’s both wrong and an over-generalization to say what tabaqui is talking about is your example, or that your example is everyone who wants non-stereotypical diversity.
