Whether a big deal was made is heavily dependent on what groups you listen to. So I would not see any lack of criticism as anything but a subset of what actually happened. (I also think you're not really being nuanced about "allowances". it's a good idea to everyone to actually be upfront about what they actually will tolerate) Relative is indeed relative here.

Personally, I'm way more okay with violence than you are OP, even if I think this was a major over-reaction, where he got triggered and then rolled that straight into religious justification to cover shame. To a certain extent, I think the ethics of the slap were fairly easy even if you are more okay (Will shouldn't have done it as it was not in kind to the offense), but the conversation that erupted was wild and very telling of how little people actually reckon with how much violence is actually approved and how that affects non-approved violence. Like, I assume Regina Hall got consent to pat down Brolin and Momoa and that all the men who came on stage knew about her joke on medical assault beforehand, but I'll tell you it was very weird for that to happen and then have the academy say "we don't condone violence" because of something that looked like just as much a joke before I realized it was real.
