Well that was today's White News flash, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-08 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly.

I don't know where OP spends their time, but I've OVERWHELMINGLY seen criticism of Smith and praise for how Rock handled being slapped.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-07 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I think, if anything, the response to this disproportionately large. One guy made a shitty joke about another guy's wife, the other guy slapped him. Both are not great things to do, but they could have just apologised and that would be case closed. But I guess nobody really cares much about the Oscars these days, so the media have to artificially inflate this rather trivial situation into a scandal. I wouldn't even be surprised if it was all staged.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-07 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, describing it as the worst thing to ever happen at the Oscars including that time they gave an Oscar to a child abuser and a rapist, as well as seeking to completely destroy Smith's career, is well out of proportion. And I think the first commentor kinda has it as to why too.

For me it wasn't the slap so much as how deliberate it was - it didn't look at all to me like a moment of lost temper at a joke, it was more "laugh at lame joke, take a second, realize my wife isn't happy, and then saunter down to smack, saunter back and then yell profanity". If it had been an immediate lost-temper response to a very nasty "joke", I could be on team "I'm not saying he should've slapped him... but I understand". But as it was... it was seriously bizarre.

Also - I get defending your spouse from violence, and standing up for your spouse when insulted or maligned. But this was escalation, not defense. [I mean, ideally, a comedian makes a joke you don't like about your spouse, you make one right back at the comedian - that's still "rude" but it's same-level rude.]

So, as it is, I'm far more "I'm not saying he should've made a joke about her haircut... but I understand."

(Anonymous) 2022-04-07 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It isn't a haircut, it is a medical condition she has and the guy telling the joke had previously done a whole routine on her medical condition too.

I agree about the deliberateness, that's the bit that made me stop. I don't think he deserves a trial by media, but he still deliberately and consciously hit someone - even though the joke was punching down at his wife's medical condition, it wasn't an appropriate or equivalent response.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-07 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"laugh at lame joke, take a second, realize my wife isn't happy, and then saunter down to smack, saunter back and then yell profanity"

honestly, i'm not entirely convinced jada didn't put him up to it ("how dare you laugh, either make this right or you're sleeping on the couch tonight or i'll blow another one of your son's friends or whatever") and i'm worried i come out thinking she's the biggest heel of the night, which sucks because she was, you know, the target of the joke in the first place

I mean, hitting isn't a good thing to do. But given that the Academy never stopped fawning over actual child rapist Polanski, my response to the huge drama being thrown over the slap is nothing but an equally huge eyeroll. As if the Academy gives any shits about violence or abuse. They're just using it as a chance to make a scene.

sorry anon, but when people say this, what i actually hear is "i care more about the optics of violence than the feelings of sick/disabled people".

our conversation around these things matter. joking about somebody's appearance matters. letting it slide would have signalled to at least a % of viewers that it's acceptable to mock someone so long as you've chosen a "safe" topic.

Whether a big deal was made is heavily dependent on what groups you listen to. So I would not see any lack of criticism as anything but a subset of what actually happened. (I also think you're not really being nuanced about "allowances". it's a good idea to everyone to actually be upfront about what they actually will tolerate) Relative is indeed relative here.

Personally, I'm way more okay with violence than you are OP, even if I think this was a major over-reaction, where he got triggered and then rolled that straight into religious justification to cover shame. To a certain extent, I think the ethics of the slap were fairly easy even if you are more okay (Will shouldn't have done it as it was not in kind to the offense), but the conversation that erupted was wild and very telling of how little people actually reckon with how much violence is actually approved and how that affects non-approved violence. Like, I assume Regina Hall got consent to pat down Brolin and Momoa and that all the men who came on stage knew about her joke on medical assault beforehand, but I'll tell you it was very weird for that to happen and then have the academy say "we don't condone violence" because of something that looked like just as much a joke before I realized it was real.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-08 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think being online pushes people into taking a stance when you don't have to have a take on everything. Or you can be of more than one mind about something, for example,

1. He shouldn't have slapped him.
2. He shouldn't have told that joke.
3. This whole thing is stupid.

Yup. I lost all respect for Will Smith over this. Well, this and also finding out he's a scientologist.

Conversely, I gained respect for Chris Rock. His humor isn't typically my cup of tea, but his professionalism and self-control in this situation was admirable. Also, he apologized to Wanda Sykes after it happened, because "it was supposed to be her night" and now the slap was all anyone was going to be talking about. That shows real strength of character. I hope the poor guy at least made some good money when his streaming rates and ticket sales went stratospheric for a few days.

I think it's appalling how little people are condemning Chris Rock for his "joke". Violence is bad etc., but so is making jokes of anyone's illness or disability. If it had been someone about someone using a wheelchair, I bet the reactions would've been different. People like to ignore illnesses and disabilities that aren't as obvious at first sight and think they don't really matter.
