(Anonymous) 2022-04-08 07:19 am (UTC)(link)It was a shocking, jarring WTF moment when it happened because you sure as hell don't expect to see that onstage at the Oscars - I saw it live and I thought they were doing a skit at first! - but also, it's kind of funny. Comedy is the art of the unexpected, and this sure as hell was. It's prime meme material. Nobody was seriously hurt and nobody's career is going to end over it. It was more like a bar fight moment than rape or serious violence. Will Smith will still get plenty of work (though probably suspended by the Academy for a couple years). Chris Rock will milk this for a special that will make bank.
You can say to an acquaintance at work, "hey, what about that slap, lol." You can't do that with behind-the-scenes sexual violence.
