I mean, hitting isn't a good thing to do. But given that the Academy never stopped fawning over actual child rapist Polanski, my response to the huge drama being thrown over the slap is nothing but an equally huge eyeroll. As if the Academy gives any shits about violence or abuse. They're just using it as a chance to make a scene.

Plus the whole Harvey Weinstein thing too, where everyone knew he was a sexual predator but let him basically run the whole show for years. If they wanted to be drawing a line in the sand over violence, it is a bit fucking late.

And Adrien Brody forcefully kissing Halle Berry when he won his award some years back, which I think isn't brought up enough. That was an assault on TV against a presenter and not only has Brody never been reprimanded for it but it was treated as a fan happy moment of exuberance and not, y'know, a man trampling all over a woman's right to consent.

Yeah but that's assault against a black woman, no one cares when that happens.

Honestly, I think one big difference why people are talking about this more than Polanski (well, aside from the fact that Polanski's last Oscar was 20 years ago) is precisely because it's not that serious.

It was a shocking, jarring WTF moment when it happened because you sure as hell don't expect to see that onstage at the Oscars - I saw it live and I thought they were doing a skit at first! - but also, it's kind of funny. Comedy is the art of the unexpected, and this sure as hell was. It's prime meme material. Nobody was seriously hurt and nobody's career is going to end over it. It was more like a bar fight moment than rape or serious violence. Will Smith will still get plenty of work (though probably suspended by the Academy for a couple years). Chris Rock will milk this for a special that will make bank.

You can say to an acquaintance at work, "hey, what about that slap, lol." You can't do that with behind-the-scenes sexual violence.

Nayrt But this is a very good point.

I'm actually old enough to remember when the news about Polanski was new. People aren't talking about this more than Polanski. They're just talking about it more recently.
