SUICIDE TW in link

sorry anon, but when people say this, what i actually hear is "i care more about the optics of violence than the feelings of sick/disabled people".

our conversation around these things matter. joking about somebody's appearance matters. letting it slide would have signalled to at least a % of viewers that it's acceptable to mock someone so long as you've chosen a "safe" topic.

A lot of people had never heard of the sickness Jada has until this happened, but I'm sure you think it's their fault for not researching every possible illness in the world.

I definitely hadn't. And tbf it's not like it's something that's immediately obvious as a health condition given how many people do stuff like that with their hair as a personal style thing.

She has been very open about it, so people who have been paying attention to her would have definitely heard about it. Although it's kind of telling that you think the guy who made an award-winning documentary about the complicated relationship between African American women and their hair was just too stupid to realize how painfully insulting his joke was.

thread OP

thank you! i forgot to mention that alopecia also disproportionately affects black women (and/or AFAB people) and that there is more background to this particular interaction, such as chris rock's past bits about jada that were poorly received. i completely forgot about the hair documentary, that's... kind of funny in a very sad way.

i'm responding directly to OP saying "but alopecia!!!111!!" as though that doesn't change the context significantly.

it's okay if you hadn't heard of it beforehand! i'm not making a judgment on ignorance.

i am, however, making a judgment about having/gaining that information and acting like it doesn't matter.

Nayrt

But that’s completely fair, and I agree completely!
