like neither of these dudes comes out smelling like a rose but when people make a big show of hand-wringing over this particular incident out of all the other "violence" in the world you've gotta wonder why this is the one they're so mad about

(Anonymous) 2022-04-07 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
it was on national TV

NAYRT but is this a 'if a tree falls in a forest' type thing? Will is in trouble because he did it in public? Had he slapped Chris after the show was over and only a handful of people saw it, it doesn't count??

(Anonymous) 2022-04-07 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. A significant part of the reason that Will is in trouble and that people care about it and there's so much handwringing about it is because everyone saw it happen on national TV. It wouldn't really be morally different if he had done it at an afterparty, but fewer people would hear about it and it would be much less salient.

Yeah, and also when the entire thing was televised, it sort of eliminates the whole "he said-she said" aspect that can make private situations murkier. There's absolutely no question as to exactly how it went down because everyone saw it happen live.

DA

Very true.

exactly- it's one thing to know that nasty things happen behind the scenes of the Hollywood machine (and even when there IS discussion it's usually overpowered by the glitz and the glam) but it's hard to ignore something that happens DURING the show.

This 10000000%.

Just looking at stuff that was trending on Twitter after someone called it "the worst thing to ever happen at the Oscars" would tell you it's not even in the top ten. And that's just at the Oscars, not Hollywood in general.

And it happened in a workplace, to someone who was on the clock doing his job. I love how people just ignore that dimension of things, especially at a time violence against workers, especially service workers, is escalating.

To me, it looked like a very rich, famous privileged man who thought he should be able to get a way with whatever he wanted.

Except it was one rich famous guy slapping another rich famous guy.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-08 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
This. AYRT is being disingenuous by comparing Chris Rock to a service worker.

They’re not wrong by saying he was just doing his job. And their last sentence rings true. But their second sentence calls their credibility into question. Because it makes it seem like AYRT is acting in bad faith.

I also really hate when people say “I love how people are ignoring [Insert Irrelevant Thing]”.

Exactly. Because every single person who remarked upon this (sadly) internationally infamous event that was broadcast on TV doesn't care about the other, more legit types of violence. They're only allowed to comment on ONE act of violence per year, so clearly if they choose this one, they're deeming it far more important than everything else in the whole wide world.
