In a cast of largely self-absorbed and entitled characters, Ross was also whiny and sulky, and apparently that's where a lot of people draw the line.

For a lot of people, it’s more his behavior towards Rachel. Both in his somewhat creepy “nice guy” traits towards her before they dated, his possessiveness while they were dating, and the way he acted after The Break. For example, when they were still dating he treated her terribly about her having a new and demanding career that she was passionate about when she started working for Bloomingdale’s, because she wasn’t at his beck and call anymore. That relationship was a disaster all around.

He’s also a condescending know-it-all who treats his friends as lesser because they’re not as smart or well-education as him. I think Chandler is the only one he doesn’t act that way towards, because while Chandler isn’t as smart, he still has the next most “respectable career”. (For a while, at least, until Chandler quits.) And they were college roommates, so Ross knows he’s just as well-educated, and doesn’t condescend to him the same way he does the others. He may be whiny and sulky, but I’ve only seen that be the only thing that made him hated for a few people. Especially because he stopped being sulky after a couple of seasons, though he remained whiny.

I’m saying this as someone who likes Ross just as much as I like the rest of the cast. He’s just as funny as his friends to me. But man does he have a lot of faults! So do the rest, of course. But his are more front and center than others. And he also displays a lot of behavior that was considered tame but pathetic in the 90s-early 00s, but are considered much worse to a modern audience. Like his aforementioned “nice guy” traits. That plays a part.
