while I don't necessarily agree (especially about it being the ONLY explanation), her statements akin to how she might have also been confused about her gender identity as a teen if she'd read things from modern trans activists did kinda make me wonder. maybe she is a bit uncomfortable with her gender. I wouldn't go so far as to label her as a trans man though or misgender her - you're not doing us any favors there. even though she is an absolute shitheel, let's not go deciding anyone's pronouns for them.

this is also part of a wider & more complicated convershayshay about the difference between gender dysphoria and discomfort with gender roles and how we talk about those things but that's a whoooole other can of delicious worms...

I'm sure Mister Galbraith doesn't mind the male pronouns.

ayrt, and I'm sure she doesn't mind as she's never going to see this, but it's not really about that. more about "I can misgender this person because I don't like them" being an eternally bad take regardless.

I've heard comments like that before and IMO it's just another type of scaremongering. It's totally normal to question your gender, even as a cis person, and ultimately come to a "nah" vote. But what TERFs like to do is say that those Evil Trans People Are Poisoning Minds, and pretend that that normal teenage questioning stage will get twisted and manipulated blah blah blah

TL;DR it's almost certainly not about her own gender feelings and instead about another way to make trans people out to be predators

(ayrt) yeah, maybe. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I think it's possible for it to be a bit of both. I agree it's normal to question your gender & doesn't make you trans. I have heard comments like that before from people that later came out though too. it depends!

Yeah, being trans is really rare, though. Most people who aren't trans aren't going to want to transition.

I have heard of a few older trans men who transitioned because being a butch lesbian really sucked hard in terms of discrimination and abuse from others, and I can see that, but hopefully people are more accepting now.

Exactly! And that’s going along with what ayrt was saying. Transphobic people acting like “evil trans people are trying to influence cis children to want to be trans by preying on their questioning feelings” is ridiculous for many reasons, obviously. But key among those reasons is that being trans doesn’t work that way. Being trans is still rare, and it’s not a trend that cis people are participating in. People who aren’t trans aren’t going to want to transition. This should be obvious, but nobody said TERFs were logical.

The example you gave of the butch lesbian transitioning because they were already facing oppression and discrimination is a valid exception, but still a rare one. And it makes sense as an exception, because again, discrimination was already something they experienced before transitioning.

Most cis people would never want to go through the oppression and societal prejudice trans people go through, because they weren’t already facing that while they were cis. As far as being cis goes of course, because sexism is still a thing. But that’s a different issue than being trans or non-binary.

They're not more accepting, quite on the contrary. Just in a different way. Gender essentialism and stereotyping strikes hard these days, only from a different direction.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-09 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
And having access to information and therapy that will help you make the decision about whether transitioning is the right choice for you will greatly reduce the number of people who transition only to realize they're not really trans. "You're probably not trans because the number of trans people is so small, it's more likely you're a butch lesbian, have you considered that you're probably not trans?" is the opposite of helpful to that.

As long as we're on the rarity of identities, I was taught growing up that being gay was extremely rare and bisexual even rarer. That's one of the reasons why I ignored the ways that I liked girls resembled the ways in which I liked boys, because I couldn't possibly be one of those extremely rare bisexuals that I'd never even heard a real example of. I wasn't that special, right? It was way more likely I was straight and confused. Guess what I accepted myself as once it was discovered that those identities weren't as rare as we used to think, we just thought they were rare because nobody wanted to admit otherwise so there were just lots of people closeted or confused like me.
