I think the flimsy part for me is that Jiu Ye had a reputation for being a brilliant mastermind and Fo Ye was no slouch himself, so it's extra weird that nobody thought of the most obvious and likely most effective plan - just plain old honesty, plus a letter from Ya Tou (if she couldn't handle doing this in person) telling Er Ye what was up and pleading for him not to give up on life and harm himself, etc. etc. Which is sort of what happened eventually, but waaaaaay late?
