I don't know if telling Er Ye the truth would have helped, or if he would thought it was just some excuse. He was distraught enough to forget that Fo Ye put all his money behind getting that medicine in the first place, sold all his valuable antiques and almost bankrupted himself for them. And took a sword strike from Er Ye. All of that's not something someone does and then do a 180 suddenly, but Er Ye was beyond reasoning after her death.
