Who is your favorite film director and how many movies of theirs have you seen?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-09 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by a David Cronenberg marathon last night.

I don't know if he's necessarily my favorite but I like him enough to have seen 14 of his films.

I envy people who know director/writer names lol. I don't think I could tell you who wrote or directed like... any film I've ever seen.

It takes a very small amount of effort if you actually cared...?

I guess if you're keeping a spreadsheet or something? Like, If I watch 365 movies a year, why and how would I remember who each of those directors are?

And yeah I guess I don't really care tbh. Who wrote/directed something doesn't influence what I watch, it's the plot (and often the actors) that will have me watch something.

Not everyone keeps track of things like directors, and that’s fine. Like, there’s literally no need to be so rude and condescending to ayrt.

I guess probably Spielberg. I haven't liked many of his more recent movies, although West Side Story was great. But he's an amazing director and I do love his style.

I have seen 32 of his films.

It's hard to pick just one.
Guillermo del Toro 7/11
Sofia Coppola 5/7
Ang Lee 8/14

At first I thought you were rating the directors and I was really confused.

I’ve only seen maybe 8 or 9 of his films, but I love Cronenberg’s particular brand of creepy menace. He’s got such a great aesthetic sense of the grotesque paired with emotional tension. It’s uncomfortable in a way I really enjoy.

In contrast, I can’t deal at all with David Lynch’s brand of creepy menace. I just can’t stand it.

I don’t think I’ve seen the majority of films for any director I love, so I’m not sure about the second question. But to answer the first:

Steven Spielberg
Stanley Kubrick
Jean Cocteau
Christopher Nolan
Hayao Miyazaki & Studio Ghibli(if we’re counting studios)
Mamoru Oshii
Mamoru Hosoda
Makoto Shinkai
Quentin Tarantino

I like a lot of Paul Verhoeven, Ang Lee and Ridley Scott movies, but idk if they’re my favorites
And I’ve loved some Martin Scorsese movies, but I don’t like crime films that much, so a lot of his movies don’t interest me. He’s still great though.
I like horror, but I don’t think there’s any directors I’d single out as favorites there, besides maybe George Romero. The two Takashis: Takashi Shimizu & Takashi Miike have made some great horror films I’ve loved, same with John Carpenter, but they’ve also made a lot I didn’t like, so I’m torn.

This is hard question for me, apparently lol!

I forgot about David Lynch and the Coen Brothers, who I also really love.

I do like David Cronenberg too.

John Carpenter. I've seen 11 movies he has directed.

Steve McQueen. I've seen all his movies.

Yeah, it's John Carpenter for me as well. Think I've seen 12 or 13 of his movies, which is probably more than the number of good movies he's made.

I always forget Steve McQueen the director is not Steve McQueen the actor and when his name pops up my instinctive response is, But he's dead!!

DA

But people can also like dead directors, because their movies didn’t go anywhere, so I’m confused by this comment? Those Steve McQueens are different people, sure. But if someone asked about favorite actors and someone chose that Steve McQueen, would you still comment “But he’s dead!!”?

Maybe I’m missing what you’re trying to say?

David Fincher, no question. I've seen seven of his movies, plus Mindhunter, and the two episodes of House Of Cards he directed.

Guy Ritchie
Christopher Nolan
Guillermo del Toro
George Miller

... damn, I want to add some women to this list, but none are coming to mind.

I really wanted to add some women directors to mine but the only ones I could think of, I had only seen one of their movies (often because they had only a few).

Maybe James Cameron, I've seen and liked 6 of his 8 feature films.

But I have seen a lot of Steven Spielberg movies, 19 of his feature films, and I liked 15 of them. I've seen 14 of Richard Donner's feature films, liked 11. And I've seen 10 of Ron Howard's feature films, liked 8.

If I've seen and enjoyed at least 4 of a director's movies, I tend to think of them as good directors, like David Fincher, Steven Soderbergh, Penny Marshall, Garry Marshall, Peter Weir, Amy Heckerling, Tony Scott, Ridley Scott, John Carpenter, Rob Reiner, Chris Columbus, Howard Hawks, Blake Edwards, etc.

Hayao Miyazaki - 10 (all his feature length films, haven't seen any of his early TV work or any shorts)
Makoto Shinkai - 3 (Granted he hasn't directed a lot so far but his older films are getting English releases so hopefully that number goes up)
Russo Brothers - 5 (And a bunch of their tv episodes)
Taika Waititi - 8 (from tv and film, love this man's humor)
Bong Joon-ho - 4 (all the newer stuff)
George Miller - 4 (Mad Max to Happy Feet, gotta love a director with range)

Taika Waititi
I haven't seen Hunt for the Wilderpeople yet. But I've seen the rest of his movies.

Hunt For The Wilderpeople is a superb movie. Absolutely my favourite of the Waititi films I've seen.
