Tori Amos, Loreena McKennitt, Savage Garden, Paula Cole, and *N Sync were my LIFE when I was 14 and had just been given my first CD player. My sister and I picked up everything that looked interesting to us at the music store and we just loved everything. When I was 15, though, I found Ani DiFranco and fell in love as well (Not A Pretty Girl and From the Choirgirl Hotel defined my high school years)

Ahhh, Savage Garden! They absolutely DEFINED pre-teen school dances when I was in 5th to 7th grade. Forever a little sad that I'm ace and thus do not have any memories of slow dancing with anyone to a Savage Garden song. I mean, I was not cool or pretty in those grades, so maybe I wouldn't have slow danced with anyone even if I'd been interested. Who's to say. But looking back, it truly feels like a rite of passage or something.

Honestly, I think Savage Garden deserve to be remembered more fondly. I can listen to most of their major hits today without violently rolling my eyes. They may have been a bit OTT on the romance of it all, but there was something quite sincere about them.

AYRT - I hella respect Darren Hayes as an artist and his solo career has been wonderful to watch as he's come out of the closet and to terms with his queerness. Watching him evolve has been delightful and I love him to pieces. If you still like Savage Garden, check out his solo stuff, because it's all really good. (I bought his first album Spin when I was in Australia right when it came out and it was an amazing experience to get to hear his voice again after years of just listening to SG on repeat).
