(Anonymous) 2022-04-12 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by today's Secret #7.

I was really into Sugar Ray, Mindless Self Indulgence, and Sum 41. Heh.

The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin, mostly. ...I can't think of any "modern" music I was listening to at that age, since it was I think the next year or so I started art school and that was where I discovered They Might Be Giants.

From my dad, classic rock like Metallica and Pink Floyd. From my sisters, newer rock like Korn and Tool. From my grandma, 90s country like Reba McEntire and Garth Brooks.

For myself I was into Linkin Park, Muse, Evanescence, Foo Fighters.

When I was 14 was when I was exposed to popular music for the first time. See, before that I only heard my parents music and the Christian stuff I heard at school. My dad does classical only. My mom does old country and some 60s music.

I had no exposure to anything else until we were back in the US for a year and carpooling with another family. That family played popular radio in their car, so I got exposed for the first time. That was really when my love of music started because I heard variety for the first time and started to realize all that music could be.

That was the 90s, and at that point I started listening to boy bands, hip hop, classic rock, anything I could get my hands on.

1989? I don't know that I listened to anything distinct in 1989 besides...literally top40 radio and MTV I guess. Same thing I listened to in 1986-90.

I was going into full weeb phase at the time and pretty much had so many anime op/closing on my mp3 player (mostly of Naruto and anything related to CLAMP tbh lol) - which ultimately lead me to discovering Kokia; pretty sure her song Dandelion was the one I listened to the most back then.

Also I had a cd copy of Linkin Park's Reanimation well before actually listening to Hybrid Theory that I would play to death in rotation with Evanescence's Fallen and Papa Roach's Getting Away With Murder.

Classic Rock (Rush, Def Leppard), "Emo" music (Linkin Park, Evanescence), Rap (Nelly, Eminem) and 90s Alt Rock (The Cranberries, Nirvana)

Basically, the same music I listen to now, minus Nelly and add more 90s Alt Rock and Punk.

Smashing Pumpkins, Korn, Marilyn Manson, Garbage, Orgy, Placebo, Pet (fronted by Lisa Papineau), Joe Satriani, Metallica, Pantera, Weezer, White Zombie. Also some older stuff from my parents like Pink Floyd.

Paramore, MCR, Eyes Set to Kill, Senses Fail, A7S, TBS, Panic! At the Disco, 3 Days Grace, Linkin Park, etc.

In the indie zone, The Killers, some random indie groups/singers like Cursive, My Brightest Diamond, Bats for Lashes, and probably some other folks whose names I can't remember but found on websites where I could download for free.

Bond (the female violinist/viola group -- theme songs to many a fanfic lol). Buika. Beenie Man. Tami Chin. Basement Jaxx. Any number of reggaeton artists before their proper breaking into the English market. Ian Van Dahl. Euro Dance music lol. Freestyle. Utada Hikaru, Name Amuro, High & Mighty Colour.

I was all over the place lol. And now I'm thinking to the soundtracks I set to fics I wrote lol.

Mostly mix CDs like Now 3, 4, and 5; Big Shiny Tunes 3, 4, and 5; and Women & Song 3 and 4.

Also, a ton of indie songs I heard on Buffy and managed to download from whichever torrenting site was active at the time--Napster? Kazaa? Limewire? I don't remember which incarnation of torrenting we were on in the early 00's.

Plus Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton, and Sarah McLachlan.

Whatever I liked on the Top 40 stations. U2 mostly (very big fan for a couple of years), and the hits from the Bangles, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Europe, Cinderella, the Jets, Bon Jovi, Genesis, Beastie Boys, and stuff from a few years before like Culture Club, Howard Jones, Huey Lewis & the News, and Duran Duran. I also began listening to Latin Freestyle/House music.

I was still mostly listening to my parents collection at that age. My favorites were Fleetwood Mac, Tina Turner, Suzanne Vega, Disco Tex and the Sexolettes, Cab Calloway, New Order, The Cure and The Clash.

What movie or book has a ridiculous title?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-12 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by today's Secret #6. Ridiculously bad or ridiculously awesome.

A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell (1990) gets my vote.

I've always loved the title "Clash of the Titans." I love the Harryhausen version, and the fact that it both speaks to a huge battle and the fact that there are literally two Titans involved is cool, IMHO.

I think Brandon Sanderson in general does great titles. Some particularly great ones are "Hero of Ages," "Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians," "the Bands of Mourning," and "Rhythm of War."

I like stupid long names for stuff. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, and Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) are some.

Tori Amos, Loreena McKennitt, Savage Garden, Paula Cole, and *N Sync were my LIFE when I was 14 and had just been given my first CD player. My sister and I picked up everything that looked interesting to us at the music store and we just loved everything. When I was 15, though, I found Ani DiFranco and fell in love as well (Not A Pretty Girl and From the Choirgirl Hotel defined my high school years)
