There's always the case that someone watch something that they thought they'd like (maybe because of hype) and they end up hating it a lot, so they further their knowledge and hatred reading reddit posts and articles etc about that. You don't have to spend a lot of money to know details about something you hate (also, yes, piracy is a thing).
I don't like both people who judge without consuming the media they're critizising and people who spend a lot of time hating a media they continue to follow/consume, but I can understand and tollerate the latter way better. At least you can talk about the flaws of that media and understand why they hate it after a conversation. With people just judge prior consuming you don't get anything out of the conversation because they know nothing about it. Complete waste of time IMHO.
