Re: TMI thread

Had to get a pap smear today. Why do they always insist on starting with the bigger size? Is there an actual reason? Cuz the doc tried with the bigger one, couldn't get it in cuz I was too tense (wonder why). So she moved to the smaller one and I was good to go. Also, is the whole process extremely painful for anyone else? Maybe it is because I'm not sexually active?

I still can't do pap smears. I can't even insert a tampon or a finger without pain and clenching. The only time I've ever been able to do them is during surgery when I'm unconscious.

Ugh, I'm due for a pap smear and I really don't wanna get one. I know it's important, but I also find the whole process very painful. My doctor always uses the smallest size though. The first time I had to get one, I kinda went overboard telling her how nervous I was because I'd never been sexually active and I'm still not, so maybe that's why?

I need one but I too experience far more pain than I am comfortable with.

I screamed at my last one
after I fucking told the guy that vaginal sex was painful for me
and he was like yeah you have a narrow birth canal
so why.......

Re: TMI thread

(Anonymous) 2022-04-14 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds it painful. Honestly I can't do it. Never had vaginal sex because I know I wouldn't be able to. Can't even do vaginal exams, much less a pap smear. There are therapy things I've been told to try, but I can't afford them right now.

Re: TMI thread

(Anonymous) 2022-04-14 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sexually active and it's never been extremely painful for me? Uncomfortable, sure, but never for more than a moment or two at the most, and it's only the scraping part that is really unpleasant.

Re: TMI thread

(Anonymous) 2022-04-14 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Same, I'm kind of shocked by the amount of people who experience extreme pain here. I've been to two different gynos and neither did anything that hurt me, the scraping just feels like a bit of period pain.

NAYRT

People be different.

It’s always been either painful or very uncomfortable for me. And I thought I was the only one, and that everyone would think I’m ridiculous for fearing getting vaginal exams so much because of the pain and discomfort that I outright refuse to get them. And some still might, but now I know not everyone, thanks to this thread.

(This part is TMI) This pain has also affected my sexual activity(besides the fact that I already have a generally low libido), as I hate and can’t really stand having anything but a tongue in my vagina. I also never use tampons because of this.

So this thread has made me feel much better. As much as I feel and relate to everyone, and wish we didn’t have to feel pain from these things, it’s still comforting to know I’m not alone.

Ok?

Re: TMI thread

(Anonymous) 2022-04-14 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
What are you confused about exactly? You were agreeing with ayrt, and said you were shocked that there were so many people who found it painful. I said(I’m obviously paraphrasing a bit) people are different, and it’s nothing to be shocked over, just because it’s not your experience. And I also said that I’m glad I’m not the only one who finds it painful, and that it’s almost comforting that my experience is the dominant one in this thread, despite the fact that I also wish that none of us had to experience this painful problem.

Out of everything in a TMI thread, a thread built around Too Much Information, why does my response warrant an “Okay?”? I understand if you don’t know what to say back, and don’t know what to do with the information I gave you. But in that case, you don’t have to say anything back? But if that’s not the case, and you’re genuinely confused by something, I don’t know what. You certainly didn’t elaborate on anything to let me know if I needed to clear anything up.

When i got pap smears i was sexually active, and while not like...intensely painful, there was still pain and discomfort. The taking of the sample itself always hurt (cervix is sensitive!!), and the one time, ONE TIME i had a male GYN, it hurt like fuck. Plus he was an asshat.

I'm glad to never have to do that shite again. I dunno how often anyone has to, anymore - i know the guidelines have changed.

Ugh, I feel you on this. I've gotten one only once so far and I know I should schedule another one soon but I need to find a new doctor because the last time was so bad. I'm a short, small-framed person and the gyno used the bigger size, I immediately started getting tense and pulling away and he snapped at me to stop curling up before finally sighing and going for the smaller one. It made me so upset.

Re: TMI thread

(Anonymous) 2022-04-14 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like the smaller one is often in a different room or in a bottom drawer and the asshole was just too lazy to go and get it. Typical. Probably why they always go for the bigger one first: it's nearby.

Re: TMI thread

(Anonymous) 2022-04-14 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
They're always painful for me. I've asked multiple doctors for a numbing agent and all of them have told me they didn't want to waste the time. Thanks.... Not only do I have a very narrow cervix, but it's also pointed backwards. I don't think I will be having anymore. I had a small cancer scare because I had a 6 month bleeding session, and it was way too painful to get a pap smear, much less do a biopsy in the clinic, so I ended up going under and had them put a iud in while they were getting the biopsy. Tests came back neg for cancer and for all the HPV. So I'll take the risk; the pain isn't worth it.

I'm honestly impressed you were able to do it even with that much pain. I've never been able to do one (except when out from anesthesia). My body won't even let anything be inserted, it is just too painful.

SA

Not bragging cause honestly it's awful, but I've had more than one primary doc tell me I have an unusually high pain tolerance (almost completely tore a muscle off at the joint because my backpack was too heavy in middle school. Doc was shocked it got that bad because I never said anything and I wasn't rolling around in pain). It made me much easier to gaslight as a young adult, cause stuff would HURT but I could bear it, ergo everyone said it was a "normal" pain amount. I'm almost 40 now and if it hurts, I'm done with it.

My doctor once put in a smaller size plastic speculum and it popped out of my cooch onto the floor.
I will be performing next week in Bangkok with golf balls. See you there!

Re: TMI thread

(Anonymous) 2022-04-14 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I've never had a pap, because I'm an ace virgin, and both doctors I've asked have recommended against it.

However, I was recently sent a pamphlet in the mail saying "It looks like you're in your thirties and you've never had a gynecological exam! We are going to send you an at-home cervix screening kit that you can do yourself and send in!"

Fucking yes, okay, let's go!

It's not a pap test, obv. It just screens for high-risk HPV types and then if the test is positive for those, I may need to have a pap, but if I'm not positive for those, I just do another HPV test in several years. Works for me!

Re: TMI thread

(Anonymous) 2022-04-14 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so confused. Pap smears are cancer prevention, why would your sexual activity play into whether you need it?

Re: TMI thread

(Anonymous) 2022-04-14 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but if you're not sexually active you don't need them as often as you do if you are (due to the main cause of cancer in that region being HPV, which is sexually transmitted). You still need them whether you're having sex or not, though.

Re: TMI thread

(Anonymous) 2022-04-14 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
You still need them whether you're having sex or not, though.

Depends which doctor you ask. The doctors I've asked have said no, if I've never had sex then my chances of developing cervical cancer are apparently so low that they consider it senseless to subject me to the pain of getting pap tests.

They were extremely painful for me for a long time - I couldn’t even do the small speculum. It took lucking into a gynecologist who really took me at face value wrt the amount of pain and supported starting me off with basic at-home pt exercises as well as recommending seeing a pelvic floor specialist. Luckily as well the first specialist I saw was very helpful in getting to a point where the smaller spec didn’t hurt, and the latest GP to give me an exam asked about size beforehand, too.

But the GPs and gynos before then absolutely did not get it; even ones who really felt sympathetic or tried to talk me through each step before they did it ended up seeming at best confused by how badly I reacted to any size.

Re: TMI thread

(Anonymous) 2022-04-14 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I've only gotten one once and it hurt. Not as bad as I feared but I recall a lot of discomfort. T_T I'm not sexually active either.

Re: TMI thread

(Anonymous) 2022-04-14 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I had a fear of anything going in my vagina for decades after the doctor used an adult speculum when I was a teen. And I was a virgin too, so it hurt like hell. This fear was so bad that I refused to use tampons, and used pads instead(and I still do now in my last years of menstruation, out of habit). Not to mention I was terrified of penetrative sex, of course, for quite a long time. So I avoided any kind of vaginal exam and pap smear until I couldn’t avoid them anymore. And I’m not very sexually active, so it always hurts, or at least feels extremely uncomfortable.
