130. But I am male and I like reading/seeing hot man sex. Fffff wtf if it's ALL ABOUT FEMALE EXPRESSION, why not just write about FEMALES?

Are you not aware that the majority of slash is written by women? I can't answer your (possibly rhetorical and/or sarcastic) question before knowing this.

You can be a female and write about males and at least TRY to make it like two men are having sex in the story. This is the problem with comics and manga too. Authors usually substitute the female partner in a heterosexual relationship with the body of a male and assume that, based on this substitution, it is a successful portrayal of homosexual men. Just my two cents. :>

I completely agree with you. But my question to [livejournal.com profile] thechameleonnn has nothing to do with that.

Re: not the op

[identity profile] thechameleonnn.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
well, the secret is about how guys are written all girly bc they are placeholders for women or something-- which pisses me off. i don't care about females writing men or anything like that, i'm just sick of reading girl-in-mans-body and all this seme/uke bullshit all the time.

Re: not the op

(Anonymous) 2009-04-03 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
did we read the same secret?

the secret was saying to fucking back off the 'its not realistic' line of shit many comments make to slash fiction.

IT'S FANTASY. GET OVER IT. IT REALLY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU.

Re: not the op

[identity profile] clownfrogg.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Why don't you get off your horse and post a disclaimer so as not to lump your shitty ooc fan-fiction in with the good stuff? Thanks...

Re: not the op

[identity profile] clownfrogg.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure how you think my comment doesn't apply to the question you asked [livejournal.com profile] thechameleonnn. Essentially, you're stating that most fan-fiction is written by women, to which I countered that just because women write slash fiction doesn't necessarily mean that they can't be trusted to write male characters in a more realistic fashion.

Also, the OP (secret writer) appeared trollish to me based on the fact that they said the 'men don't matter' and that slash fiction isn't supposed to be realistic. If it's not supposed to be realistic, then I think that ought to go in as part of the disclaimer so that unsuspecting readers won't be forced to sit through pages and pages of someone's personal OOC fantasy.

pages and pages of someone's personal OOC fantasy.

welcome to the realm of fictional writing.

Re: not the op

[identity profile] clownfrogg.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Allow me to introduce you to the word "disclaimer". There are plenty of fan-fiction authors who pride themselves on being realistic and accurate. What's wrong with just posting a disclaimer on your work? Is that so hard?

Re: not the op

[identity profile] thechameleonnn.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
umm yes. i still don't really get it though.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's safer/hotter to write about men.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yes? It gives the woman some distance. By removing an identifier, you can evade personal and cultural problems about women and sex.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, because it's fantasy about objects of desire, and most females don't desire women?

The secret maker explicitly said she doesn't have a problem with men liking slash. But slash fiction is primarily written by women, for women. Men control the damn sex industry; do you seriously have such a problem with women writing stories for themselves on the internet without worrying about whether or not they're pleasing male readers?

[identity profile] thechameleonnn.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but if women don't desire women, why do they write their men all girly-like? That's kind of the point of my rant. I don't care that women are writing gay porn. I don't care that women write my ships. I wouldn't mind if the characters they write actually are that way but that's barely ever the case.

It's really just like... writing characters OOC. It's alright if it's for a fantasy or it they're writing for their own enjoyment or whatever... that's not what I have a problem with. It's just kind of a downer. I know the person who wrote the secret specifically said "who cares if it's realistic?" but personally, I don't see the point in reading fanfiction of any specific characters if it's not realistic or OOC. If you're going to butcher the characters, at least just create your own.

[identity profile] tokinokanatae.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
why do they write their men all girly-like?

And what are you defining as "all girly-like", hmm?

[identity profile] thechameleonnn.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
I know a lot of girls who write male characters very emotional and dramatic. Men don't tend to be that much. They make their characters driven by this and act on this but men are really much more quiet about their emotions and tend to keep things to themselves. Also when it comes to yaoi and smut and all that stuff in fic there's always that character that's really intensely effeminate.

It's like, yeah, there are queens irl and stuff, but not every gay man is like this.

[identity profile] tokinokanatae.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 05:22 am (UTC)(link)

Ahahahahahaha, okay then!

I really, really hate it when people generalize personality traits on gender lines.

[identity profile] thechameleonnn.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
Uh huh. So do I. Hence why I'm sick of snivelly, effeminate, over-emotional/dramatic men.

[identity profile] clownfrogg.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the stuff about seme/uke comes from Japanese manga and anime yet people apply this ideology to western produced media. Realistically, gay men and women of the western world (at least) don't tend to fall into these examples of extreme masculinity or femininity.

So, when a guy like me is trying to find good Harry Potter fandom fiction (to use an obvious example) it's kind of jarring that people make characters like Draco Malfoy and the title character into these effeminate "ukes" when in fact, those characters are absolutely NOTHING like that.

Same goes for comic book fandom. As much as people want a cuddly "uke" version of The Joker or Batman or Rorschach, it's completely out of character and nothing at all like a man of their caliber is portrayed in the original work.

[identity profile] tokinokanatae.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
That's an issue of characterization, not "how one gender acts"

HINT: What you think is "gender-specific" behavior probably isn't.

[identity profile] clownfrogg.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't say anything about gender and I thought it was fairly OBVIOUS that I was talking about characterization?

Hint: When did I mention gender specific behavior? And how are you going to dictate to me when you clearly don't understand the point I was trying to make about people applying Japanese manga and anime ideologies to western produced media in their fan-fiction?

Basically, some female writers (who have probably never even met a gay man before) decide that two characters from some western fandom are gay. They proceed to stereotype them based on what they've seen on Will & Grace or in Japanese manga and anime, thus defeating the purpose of characterization in the process.

And I'm fairly certain that [livejournal.com profile] thechameleonnn is correct in his analysis based on the fact that 'the effeminate gay male' is a stereotype dating far back in history. However, that's not my point because I was talking about the idea of the 'seme' and the 'uke.'

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, in that case...I'm sure there's other reasons, but personally, my answer to that one is, "Because they're shitty writers."

[identity profile] kribban.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they're not turned on by the female body.
