I don't play games, I just read the lore. I find the World of Warcraft, Warhammer, and Elder Scrolls lore interesting and read it even though I'm likely never going to play a game. Those worlds just interest me. I even read fic sometimes.

Same here, even with D&D and Warhammer I am just there for the lore. Warhammer shot themselves in the foot with their Fantasy version's revamp, as far as I'm concerned, because the new system is distinctly light on lore and fluff.

I ignore the new version of fantasy Warhammer and just stick with the old stuff. The older lore is way more interesting and complex and well-done.

40K lore is a hoot and a half. Especially when you find the weird old tidbits from the days of Rogue Trader that they pretend don't exist...

I feel like most D&D settings don't have super interesting lore. Planescape and Eberron maybe.

WFH definitely did, though.

The amount of DMC fic I have read at this point is hilarious. I've never played it and briefly read through the wiki and checked out some Fanart. Good enough for me!!

lol same! Tried to be ‘better’ by trying to play DMC1, then I lost my file and subsequently my interest to play the games. Still enough to make me check AO3 periodically for fics. The lore is simple enough that it’s easy to keep up.

Problem is, where the hell do you go to find out about the lore? It feels like the two main sources are annoying fan wikis and annoying youtube videos, unfortunately.

Some wikis are actually really solid. Halopedia.org is a really, really well-organized and tidy wiki site for Halo, it's insane. In fact, it seems a lot of Halo youtubers have the terrible habit of ripping off stuff from there.

I get the YouTube videos thing, but what’s so annoying about fan wikis exactly?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-27 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
There's nothing intrinsically wrong with them, it just feels like a lot of them are badly organized and badly written. It's hard to find the interesting parts of the lore, and get your orientation and figure out what really matters and is important to the setting, vs what's just included for the sake of completionism.
