Oh gosh yes, about the not "catching up". In 5th grade, we had a new student come into my class from... I think Israel (long time ago). Somewhere in the vicinity. He was a year or two younger, but my class had a kid whose family was from Jordan, and apparently he could speak the language that the new kid spoke, because the new kid didn't speak English. So they just dropped him in a class with older kids and apparently figured he'd do better having someone who could translate for him. A student, a child, not a professional translator.

At that age I was like "oh okay that makes sense, that's convenient" but in hindsight - wtf, he comes from overseas, doesn't speak the language, and you put him in a class ahead of his age because then you can make another kid do the work of making sure he understands the assignments?

So, er, yeah. It seems like they just want all kids in school, and don't care much beyond that, whether they're in the same place as the rest of the class or not.

(We were really protective of him though, and tried to help him out and teach him about the latest pop culture stuff. He learned to sing the Duck Tales theme before he could speak English very well, heheh.)

Oh heavens, the stress put on the poor "translator" kid is just not ok. Every kid has to go to school and every school does not have the resources to help every kid. It's not great!

But yeah! They just throw you in the deep end! I guess children's brains are so elastic everyone figures you'll just be ok but it sucks a lot at the time!

Yeah, at the time it was really kind of cool to me to have multiple languages spoken in class, but that really doesn't excuse that they were really failing both the new kid and his "translator".

Not to mention, kids can be awful. We were fortunate that the two of them got along (older boy was very level-headed and mature for that age) but what if they hadn't? What if the only person this kid could actually talk to wound up realizing they had nothing in common and they couldn't stand each other? And he's left in school all day with exactly one person to help him communicate with anyone else, but doesn't want to talk to him...

Thankfully it DID work out pretty well in the end, and as we got to know him better as he learned more English, we discovered he was a really smart kid so he probably would've been in advanced classes in his grade if there hadn't been the initial language barrier, but... so many ways that could've gone wrong.
