Not to mention, kids can be awful. We were fortunate that the two of them got along (older boy was very level-headed and mature for that age) but what if they hadn't? What if the only person this kid could actually talk to wound up realizing they had nothing in common and they couldn't stand each other? And he's left in school all day with exactly one person to help him communicate with anyone else, but doesn't want to talk to him...
Thankfully it DID work out pretty well in the end, and as we got to know him better as he learned more English, we discovered he was a really smart kid so he probably would've been in advanced classes in his grade if there hadn't been the initial language barrier, but... so many ways that could've gone wrong.
