I love the fact that the joke is that Homer, being a safety inspector, would notice that the lesbian bar didn't have a fire exist.

"Enjoy your death trap, ladies!".

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Haha! I never thought of that!

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
OP: I think many of us thought he was going to say something homophobic but as soon he noticed the fire exit, it was like "of course he would notice that! That's his job!".

Maybe it's just a regional thing but in my city there are a bunch of bars that everyone knows are unofficial lesbian bars? Like they don't advertise themselves as such per se but if you're in the scene you know that that's where people go.

op

see being "in the scene" is another thing I have no idea how tf to do, having been closeted most of my life. The only queer ladies I meet anywhere are either a decade+ younger than me or are my mother's age. I have no idea where the wlw older than 24 and younger than 50 hang but it ain't anywhere I've ever seen.

Ugh that's a mood

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah in my city there are lesbian bars.
Just watched that ep of Simpsons. Sooo great!

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I’m sad to report that there isn’t a single gay bar near me, let alone a lesbian one.

There are only 24 lesbian bars left in the USA, anon. so it's not a surprise, sadly.

Just kidding.

Yeah it's really really bad.

https://www.lesbianbarproject.com/

The Lesbian Bar Project is how I found how few there are, and they are actively trying to help keep open the ones that exist.

Here is an article about the situation too: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/rise-and-fall-americas-lesbian-bars-180976801/

Two of those are in Oklahoma City, which has a really nice gayborhood despite being Oklahoma City. There are like eight gay bars you can walk to.

Love your icon!

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
wow none of those are in my state...wish I could be surprised about that but I'm not :(

The only one I was aware of was Ginger's, which I went to once when I was in NY. At least half the people there were men and everyone looked barely past their 21st birthday, which as I'm over 30 now and was over 30 then was extremely disappointing.

I live in the UK and it pains me to remember how many good lesbian bars had closed in the past. The only ones I know that are still going is one for rich people and the other in the basement of G-A-Y (at least before the pandemic hit).

Every other ad for bars insists that they're lesbian-friendly gay bars and just, aren't really that at all (the only exception was a gaming pub that would have lesbian nights every month, but its really far out my way for a night out from where I live). It sure does suck.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
My first job as a librarian was in Dallas. Most of my coworkers were gay, which is not uncommon in libraries, and they used to take me to hang out at a lesbian pub called Sue Ellen's. (It was right down the street from a gay country dance bar called JR's.) There was usually live music at Sue Ellen's and we all had a crush on this one local singer named Deborah Vial. (Including me and I am an awkward straight woman. She was delightful.)

I don't think Sue Ellen's exists any more, sadly. It was such a great place. I wish you could have gone there, OP.

I was gonna say there's at least one in my city! -but, alas, just looked it up and it has closed :( Probably long ago, since the last Yelp review is from 2008.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Similarly, I’d recently heard a lesbian bar in an old neighborhood of mine was still open - it was the only one I knew of in the area. This thread prompted me to look it up and wow, did it shift strongly to a gay/mlm clientele.

[personal profile] lumy12 2022-04-30 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get it. I mean, obviously bars are businesses and they have to do what's profitable... but the one I remember was a happenin' place! Didn't realize there was a phenomenon across the US until seeing this thread.

People stopped going to bars in general as much, so one by one they've closed down, OP :(

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
There used to be a whole lot more, so I don't know when this episode of the Simpsons came out, but it could have been accurate for the times. Not that I went to them often because this was back when you could smoke in bars and it's disgusting.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
I read lesbian bars are in decline. (Climate change? Deforestation? Microplastics??) Maybe there used to be more of them when that Simpsons episode was made.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-30 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
The decline is due to the translobby stealing all the lesbians.
--JK Rowling, probably.

i'm finding myself reminded of the twain from faking it - lesbian coffee shop by day, gay bar by night
