Best Reboots/Remakes: Dredd, sort of Mad Max Fury Road, True Grit, Dawn of the Dead, The Fly, The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Worst Reboots/Remakes: most of the DCEU, The Day The Earth Stood Still, Carrie, Robocop.

Does it count as a reboot if it's a new adaptation of the same original source text? Genuinely not sure.

Personally, I say it is a reboot only if it references the other adaption and is as much an adaption of that as of the original. If it is just an entirely new adaption of the same source without anything specific to the other adaption, then no it isn't a reboot.

Not phil, but it probably depends a little on the property and how long it has been around to be adapted?

Like, I wouldn't consider each successive adaptation of "The Christmas Carol" to be a reboot, but if someone made another Hunger Games trilogy, that would probably be a reboot. It's kind of a weird distinction, now that I think about it.

It is definitely a weird distinction! True Grit is the one that's the most interesting to me, because the John Wayne version is an incredibly loose adaptation of the original novel, whereas the Coen Brothers one is an extremely faithful adaptation that doesn't really reference the first movie in any way. But the John Wayne movie is the only part that most people are familiar with - so from a pop culture point of view, it's a reboot of that.

I love Dredd. Such a good movie. Mad Max Fury Road is pretty good too. Also so agreed on all of your worst.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and Body Snatchers (1993). I looked them up on imdb, once the search engine finally figured out there's no I in Star Wars.

There's also apparently a 2007 loose adaptation called The Invasion. And there are also two different adaptations of the Heinlein novel with the same basic set up (The Brain Eaters from 1958 which was plagiarized, and The Puppet Masters from 1994 (which also starred Donald Sutherland)). It's a classic.

Dredd - so good. I've watched it half a dozen times in the last three months and it just gets better.
