Probably going to get yelled at for this but I liked the women Ghostbusters better than the original. I not only thought it was a good, funny movie but it eliminated a couple of things about the original I wasn't crazy about.
I also liked the Peter Jackson King Kong better than the original. The Peter Jackson version was scarier and also seemed to have an underlying theme of a friendship between two people from totally different cultures, which was entirely absent from the original. Plus there was a scene I really disliked in the original which wasn't in the remake at all.

Honestly I agree on Ghostbusters. The sexism of the original just drove me too crazy. Although, I admit I really like the villain of Ghostbusters 2. But overall the female reboot is my favorite.

I love Peter Jackson's King Kong. I actually saw it in the theater 3 times I liked it so much. Even though the story isn't usually something I'd be into, how he did it just really worked for me.

I also didn't like how the one Black guy in Ghostbusters had no good lines and nothing to do, he was just kind of there. The Black lady Ghostbuster had lots of very funny lines and a specific job to do, she was the New York historian.

Good point.

winston had some amazing lines ("has it ever occurred to you that maybe the reason we've been so busy lately is because the dead HAVE been rising from the grave?")

and he was the everyman who admitted he was just there for a job; nothing to do but scut work and driving the ecto-1 was part of the gig, and in that context he worked fine - sure he could have had some secret specialism or specific skill set, but when you've got "if there's a steady paycheck in it i'll believe anything you say" it wouldn't make sense for him to be anything more than that

as moviebob once said, the entire joke of ghostbusters (84 at least) is that the whole zuul / vinz / gozer / mystical / ethereal / grand stakes / end of the world stuff ISN'T resolved by a fabled hero or a legendary wizard or a secret granddaughter of the bad guy - like it would normally be in such a setup -, it's resolved by these four fat dudes, at least one of whom is transparently a fraud and one just wants a bit of cash - giving them valid personal specialisms and history would defeat the entire point

This. I don’t get people undervaluing Winston, or just referring to him as “The One Black Guy”. Like, he is, but why use that overly literal and kind of backhanded description instead of his name? He’s a straight man foil, while also not letting his down to earth nature make him too skeptical. He’s almost an audience proxy in that way, as he’s more average than the others tend to be personality and intellect wise, but accepts things as they are in a way that I feel speaks to the audience’s sense of wonder at the supernatural events in the film. (Especially for the time the movie came out, and these were some of the coolest looking practical effects.)

I do think Ghostbusters 2016 is just as good, if not better(although I admit I mostly stayed away from Twitter when it was released because I was sick of the haters), and each member is more equal in terms of lines and screentime than the original. And Patty is just as great as Winston. But both of them are more than just “the black guy/lady”. I’m not saying that description is offensive or prejudiced, just overly simplistic and a bit belittling of their characters.

I mean even as an Everyman he's kinda just. There. He's largely just background even in the main group. You can do an Everyman and make them more interesting than Winston was who spent most of his time kinda just existing to make the group an even four.

We can agree to disagree, because I felt like he was a very engaging and cool character, regardless of having the least amount of screentime of the 4.

I'm right there with you on the 2016 Ghostbusters.

Definitely agree with you on Ghostbusters, though I'm admittedly a little biased here due to my massive crushes on both Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

Amen to that

The Peter Jackson Kong had a great, great cast and great effects but I just couldn't help feeling it could have been a half an hour shorter without losing anything.

I loved the women Ghostbusters, it was so funny.
