I think that an issue with laugh tracks is that while they can be fun when you’re laughing along, they’re grating when you don’t find the jokes funny.

Laugh tracks on my favorite shows? Great, makes me feel just like you said, like I’m having fun with a whole group of people.

Laugh tracks on shows I don’t like? Makes me hate them 50% more, like the show is hammering home that I should be laughing at their unfunny jokes.

OK but like... if they make bad shows worse, is that really a big deal? I mean if it's already a bad show, you're not going to watch it whether or not there's a laugh track.

You’re right, I didn’t mean it as an argument against the use of laugh tracks. I just think it might be part of why people get so angry about them.

Oh! Sorry, I understand what you mean now. And you're probably right - when people think of laugh tracks, they think of According To Jim, King of Queens and Chuck Lorre shows, not Seinfeld or Newsradio.
