Laugh tracks are good.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-07 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that an issue with laugh tracks is that while they can be fun when you’re laughing along, they’re grating when you don’t find the jokes funny.

Laugh tracks on my favorite shows? Great, makes me feel just like you said, like I’m having fun with a whole group of people.

Laugh tracks on shows I don’t like? Makes me hate them 50% more, like the show is hammering home that I should be laughing at their unfunny jokes.

OK but like... if they make bad shows worse, is that really a big deal? I mean if it's already a bad show, you're not going to watch it whether or not there's a laugh track.

You’re right, I didn’t mean it as an argument against the use of laugh tracks. I just think it might be part of why people get so angry about them.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-07 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! Sorry, I understand what you mean now. And you're probably right - when people think of laugh tracks, they think of According To Jim, King of Queens and Chuck Lorre shows, not Seinfeld or Newsradio.

Ouch. Not me, OP. I'm glad sitcoms have gotten away from them. They feel too try-hard and are inevitably used over jokes that fall flat.

I agree with you completely. It's especially annoying in cartoons.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-08 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
What cartoons use laugh tracks? That’s so weird, and I haven’t heard of that being a thing.

Hanna Barbara used them A LOT, ironic since their cartoons weren't funny.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-08 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m glad I missed those then! But I avoided their cartoons anyways, because as you said, they’re not funny.

Me too, anon!

Most multi-camera sitcoms use a mix of live audiences and laugh tracks (aka sweetening). It's a slight pet peeve when people assume sitcoms are only using laugh tracks when it was mostly single cam comedies that used them (think Andy Griffith Show, Brady Bunch and MASH).

I mostly assume when people talk about "laugh tracks" they're including both canned laughter and live studio audience reaction, even though it's not technically accurate

CBS made the MASH producers and directors use a laugh track, they didn't want to use it. Plus it sounded really fakie, especially that weird "wooooooo" sound.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-08 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. And I personally find it pretty annoying when people complain about laugh tracks when it’s either obviously a studio audience, or they could at least look up whether it was or not before complaining. Even though I personally don’t mind laugh tracks, I get why people don’t like them, and why they feel like it’s a cheap and stupid cue to try to tell people to laugh at a bad joke they otherwise wouldn’t. That’s manipulative, and won’t work. But when people say that about a show with an actual studio audience, it’s like, no these are real people laughing. Not a canned sound.

I agree. Not huge on sitcoms in general, but I think most of the ones I like do have a laugh track. But I do prefer it when it is more subtle. How I Met Your Mother managed to use it to good effect without overdoing it.

The only show I like with a laugh track is Married With Children because it sounded like there was more audience participation. Like the guy telling Al not to eat the toothpaste sandwich.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-07 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, anon. Maybe it's just having grown up with them but it makes the show feel more warm/comfy? It just puts me in a better mood!

(Anonymous) 2022-05-07 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Hate 'em. Won't watch a show that has them because they are that annoying.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-07 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
that's actually the intended purpose

Eh, I don't really like laugh tracks. I don't like the "This is funny. Laugh. Are you laughing at this funny thing? Laugh!" kind of vibe I get from them. I don't like being "told" when to react to something, especially if I don't feel it, you know?

Live audiences are a little better, because they're a bit more spontaneous and genuine. I still prefer nothing though.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-08 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
For the most part, I’m so used to hearing laugh tracks that I don’t even really notice them. Sometimes I’ll have to think about whether certain shows had a laugh track or not, because they don’t even register most of the time. The reason for this is because I grew up watching so many sitcoms, I guess.

I feel like the only one who doesn’t notice them and doesn’t need to try to tune them out, and doesn’t mind them as a result. Because so many other people hate them and complain about them. Some even say they ruin the shows for them. And I just don’t have that problem.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-08 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm with you on that. I don't really notice them or mind them, if a laugh track is there I kinda just accept it.
