I 100% agree about Martin Freeman. I think it's more complicated with RDJ. He does get typecast. But I think the difference between RDJ and Freeman is that Freeman gets typecast because he has one thing he's really good at whereas I think RDJ falls into it by default. He does have range and he can be really good playing a wide range of roles. But people are willing to pay him a buttload of money to do schtick in blockbusters so that's what he ends up doing.

NAYRT - I honestly haven't seen enough of RDJs work to know whether he has range or not. He's SO good when he's playing to type that even if that's all he can do well, I honestly still feel like, "shut up and take your awards!" But it definitely is more impressive when an actor has range, and I haven't seen enough RDJ stuff to know whether he does or not.

I very much agree about RDJ, I think he was amazing in Chaplin for example. It's not that he can't act, he just has been playing pretty the same character in any movie he's been in for the last 15 years and I really hope that changes soon.

SA
*pretty much the same character

it's also complicated if you only consider his present and future roles and not what he used to be in the past. he was THE Brat Pack actor back in the 80s, but a lot of people forget that.

then again, I don't mind if he's decided in his old age that he's just going to cash paychecks and spend his free time fostering kittens or whatnot. kind of like Ewan McGregor, who is an amazing actor but is happy cashing those fat Star Wars checks so he can go off promoting indie films or environmental causes or whatever he's into this week. there are some actors who don't feel the need to be groundbreaking in every single role and have a fulfilling life outside of acting and that's okay. frankly, more of that, please, so I don't have to hear about their scandalous lives all the damn time.

This. I still remember watching him in all kinds of things from Rules of Attraction to Ally McBeal, and it was so different from the typecasting he’s known for now. I don’t even really like either of those works, but I sure did watch them, and I thought he was pretty good in them. I also really love him in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which was actually made by the director of Iron Man 3, and I would highly recommend that film. And again, RDJ was playing a different type of character than the Tony Starks he would later play. His pre-Tony career was quite different, and should be separated from his post-Tony roles by anyone who doesn’t like his post-Tony typecasting.

I would say Hugh Grant used to be in this category but has totally broken out of it and proven himself with more diverse roles than floppy-haired charmingly awkward toff boyfriend."

This. RDJ needs to stop saying yes to those roles and do some real acting. He should have enough money by now.

He's going to be in the Chris Nolan Oppenheimer biopic soon so that'll be interesting to see at least

So long as he doesn't play him as Tony Stark.

He has good range, so there’s no reason to assume he would play him as Tony Stark until there’s a trailer out to indicate as such. And even if he were to “play him” like Tony Stark, you know he doesn’t do that of his own volition, right? There’s direction being given to actors for how they want them to play a role. And if they didn’t want him to play a character like Tony, they would either tell him not to, or find someone else who can fit the role better.

I'm well aware that, a lot of the time, bad acting is the result of bad directing. I'm saying that RDJ is such a powerhouse in Hollywood that he can afford to take the hit and leave.

For the record, RDJ isn't playing Oppenheimer, he's playing a supporting role
