I'm confused by what you seem to think readerfic is then? That's most readerfic? Basically it's just there to let the reader imagine they're this character for a little while. Like playing a video game and referring to the avatar as "youself" even though there are no real similarities and you know, of course, that the avatar is not actually you. All the decently written ones and garbage ones are going to read like an OC with name blanks. It'd be impossible to write otherwise. They're basically text based adventure games without the multiple choice.

NAYRT

As the avid self insert reader from a few replies above, this is such a great way of framing it! "You" are essentially an avatar from a video game playing and adventure game with out the options. And they're essentially OCs, just changing the camera perspective (like the OG James Bond games on Nintendo lol). There are many times I don't see myself in Y/N that I'm reading and exclaim "what a fool! Why would you do that?!", But it's just part of the experience!

i've never thought about it this way but maybe i should have? i always found myself getting super annoyed when trying to read these fics and the "reader" character is given too many specified traits (a certain age, boob size, body type, etc) that would kick me right out of the story because i thought the point of it was to make the "reader" character as vague as possible so that the actual reader could self-insert. except the "reader" character turned out to be an oc (or, i guess, the author themself?) when you start reading them, you never know what you're getting into so i stopped trying to read them. i dunno, i guess this type of fic isn't my thing.

Earlier reader inserts use to give all kinds of traits to the insert. But it's more "in style" now to keep things as vague as possible except for things directly tied to the premise or which are plot relevant. At least appearance wise. You can't really get around writing a certain personality. I totes get it as a "not my thing" sort of deal but I never understood people's confusion over the insert being a character in the first place.

It's less "this is me!" and more "I'm going to pretend this is 'me' for a little while." And it can be hard to explain the appeal. It's just projection turned up to eleven but everyone generally knows what they're there for.

(Yes, there's a high volume of garbage ones but there's a high volume of garbage anything in fandom because there's no bar for entry. I've come across plenty who have excellent technical writing skills it's just that what they're writing isn't something everyone likes.)

as someone who was unfamiliar with readerfic at the time, i guess that's what i didn't understand about it. it was billed as you x character but the "you" was actually an oc some of the time. prior to that, i was definitely familiar with oc x character fic but it was usually tagged as oc x character. i didn't realize "reader" meant the same as oc for some fic but not for others. plus i was more familiar with tumblr imagine-type stuff which was much more vague but also sometimes tagged as readerfic. i dunno, to me, it just seems like "readerfic" could mean a lot of different things and i never considered the video game avatar aspect before. (i don't play video games though so maybe that's why.)
