tracks with how JKR's world is racist and classist

(Anonymous) 2022-05-11 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yep.

Oh bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-11 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Classist yes, intentionally so. That's like the entire motivation of the bad guys. Racist? It doesn't meet today's expectations, but for the time it was published it was not racist at all.

Given that the secret is about Hagrid, I figure anon is thinking more about the fantastical racism-type stuff - that is to say, the depiction of fantastical magical races in ways that is uncomfortably reminiscent of real-life stereotyping - rather than JKR's portrayal of real-life non-white characters.

Yeah, Hagrid being a good teacher wouldn't make sense within JKR's system of values and tropes, his character wouldn't fit into his archetype that way

(Anonymous) 2022-05-11 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
The only other giant we meet, the giantess, is not a bad teacher and is definitely not 'stupid'. And Hagrid isn't stupid. He's bumbling and absent minded but he's also one of the kindest characters in the book. He is easily led astray, but then we get enough background to understand he probably has abandonment issues. Tbh, he's just a really good character, as are most of the characters in H.

His brother was mentally sub-par, but the other giants were targeting him because of that.

The other giants were vicious, brutal and quickly turned to the dark side, right? so IDK how compelling this argument is

(Anonymous) 2022-05-11 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
They targeted him because he was the runt, there was nothing about it being because of his mental capacity, are you misremembering?

(Anonymous) 2022-05-11 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Hagrid’s got a middle-school education, a drinking problem and very little common sense. He is frequently taken advantage of, and makes several extremely bad decisions. At least some of those things are not his fault, but he’s not scoring particularly well on the IQ or EQ scale.

Mme Maxime isn’t a teacher. She’s headmistress. We know she’s a competent witch who tries hard to pass as full-human, and that’s about all we know.

Grawp’s intelligence is unknown since no one speaks his language. The other characters treat him like another one of Hagrid’s dangerous pets.

Nobody thought the books said anything bad about giants until hating JK Rowling became trendy. This take is full of projection.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-11 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
People make similar points about fantasy races in cases where JKR is not involved. So, no.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-11 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes that's totally what's going on here, and not people getting their hateboner off.

Someone wasn’t around when the books were still new, because a solid third of fandom were already questioning JKR’s take on non-human races well before the series ended. “The only good giants are the ones that can pass for humans” isn’t quite up there with “the only house-elf who isn’t a happy slave is an oddball who is shunned by the rest of his people” or “actually, people should hate and discriminate against werewolves because Lupin’s the only one who isn’t a violent child molester.” But fans noticed it in the aughts and it got included with the rest of the meta and fixit fic.

+100

(Anonymous) 2022-05-11 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
No I was always uncomfortable and confused why the giants all joined the Dark Side.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-11 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
A popular headcanon in the old days of HP fic was that the giants had been so badly treated by the Ministry (with regards to loss of territory, sanctioned giant killing, etc) that it wasn’t hard for Voldemort’s people to convince their leaders that their people would have a fairer shake under the new regime. Turns out that a lot of people were disappointed with ‘giants team up with wizard nazis because they’re genetically evil’ even before JKR discovered twitter.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-11 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard similar stuff about the goblins for at least 10 years.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-11 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, well, you see, the haters are so powerful that they used their hater magic to timetravel back and convince everyone to hate JKR 10 years ago.

That's how unreasonable they are.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-11 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right and you should say it.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-11 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
In bizarro world maybe. But in reality? Yeah, no, that’s so wrong it’s funny.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-11 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
given how she's also been voicing her recent opinions on 'mentally disabled' people, I'm becoming less and less surprised.
