"I wanted to suggest that there could be a separate comment thread for each secret, but someone already suggested it and there was a concern about loading times.

I would rather bear the longer loading times for separate comment threads for each secret than painstakingly search for responses to specific secrets on each page of comments (and then going back to look if anyone's responded since last check).

There are other benefits as well:
- Questions about a specific secret (Eg. What episode is this secret from?) can be answered once for everyone without being repeatedly asked and answered over the course of 10+ pages.
- It could encourage people to comment on a secret that doesn't have any comments yet.
- It would save the Ctrl and F buttons of keyboards everywhere.

Could there at least be a poll about this suggestion please?"

I'm half and half. It'd be good, and easier, but a lot of work on your side. Try for a week and repoll?

[identity profile] sevetenks.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I said try it once and re-poll, though really I'd say do it for a week so we can really get an idea how it works as opposed to just a little thing like that.

Seconded. The first time is obviously going to be glitchy -- half of the people will be all "WHERE DO I PUT MY COMMMENTTTTTTT DDDD:" but let it go for another time or two and it should smooth out.

I concur.

itp people do not understand long threads = major lag

[identity profile] sevetenks.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand fine, but there IS something to be said for organization's sake--! Nothing wrong with just testing to see what happens, right?

I'm leaning more on the 'YES!!!11!!" than the "NOOOO" side, although I voted try and re-poll just because...I like trying something out before making a final decision. I can see it being GREAT for the rare occasions I make secrets, though. Plus, often by the time I get to a post, there's already 4+ pages of comments--it'd make it a lot easier to *discuss* the secrets instead of just offering random comments. A lot of times when I do bother to read the other comments, I realize I'm just parroting what someone else already said.

I vote to try it. It'd be easier for the secret poster, but not for commenters who want to comment on multiple secrets. There's more commenters than secret posters so leaving it the old way is probably more convenient for the many, actually.

having individual threads would make it easier to discuss things, especially if you're the OP looking for comments about your secret. but it only takes a few minutes to look through a post anyway.

loading time doesn't bother me, lj only makes everything lag hard whenever I click expand. but, if the thread is that long I'll just right click it into a new tab.

I say try it out for a few posts and see how people react to it. one question though - are you going to post all the initial comments or leave it up to people and delete any duplicate threads?

Try and re-poll plox. Though I'm really not huge on this idea, since I usually comment on multiple secrets, and this method is far less productive for that. XP

I'd like to see if people actually used it, and if they did, it would be really, really useful. But otherwise, you'll have a lot of "lost" replies, seeing as how so many people still haven't mastered the "Reply to this" button snrrrrrrr

but hey, if it works, all of the wank, one convenient area! :D

I voted no 8| I like to read through all the pages and seeing people's comments while I browse, and it's easier to just make one comment than to go search for each thread.

IDK, it seems like it'd work if everyone had long, detailed responses for each secret, but what about all the silly answers? Would you really go look for the specific thread and all just to go "LOLOL" or "I AGREE" or whatever?

I said try it and repoll....

another idea- ask everyone to put the secret number(s) in the subjec of the comment? A lot of people do, but some don't. That would make the search for comments on a certain secret easier... but also allow people to make comments on more than one secret at a time.

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Agh...I can't believe th "NO!1!!!" vote is in the minority. :( I mean, considering how popular the "They changed it, now it sucks" thing is, and how much backlash there always is when a site changes layout (anyone remember the e-riots when the last.fm layout changed?) ...I'd think more than 89 people would object :(

Keep the commenting the way it is, please?

[identity profile] nakotaco.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that it's possible it'll end up being more trouble than it's worth, because I don't know how much I'm going to want to fish through however many pages of threads looking for the ones for the secrets I want to comment on, but I also think it's worth a shot at least once, just so see how it works out.

[identity profile] morejellytoast.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh, test run it but I'm against it. I like being able to address all the secrets that interest me in one comment.

[identity profile] holy-shpootnik.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I said not because I'm selfish and actually like Ctrl+F'ing though the comments to see the responses to the secrets that interest me..

It's like some sort of perverse treasure hunt.

This this and THIS.

No sir, I don't like it.

I vote no, for many reasons already stated.

[identity profile] emila-wan.livejournal.com 2009-04-04 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the idea of each secret having its own thread, but why not just let people post their secrets themselves? Saved the mod a lot of trouble, and anything flagged by viewers as a repeat or inappropriate could be deleted.

[identity profile] paperspades.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think maybe try it for a week then re-poll. Once might not affect everyone. I know Some days there isn't anything I want to read/write comments about.
