I’m curious if OP enjoys other cable TV procedural mystery-of-the-week shows because I thought Elementary was an above-average example of the genre.

It was also an interesting adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes characters (much preferred to BBC Sherlock). But yeah, I didn’t find the individual plots riveting.

OP
I think I don't really like mystery-of-the-week stuff. Also procedurals are not my thing. It hurts to say it, but at the start BBC Sherlock was more fun to me than Elementary

Yeah, that’s totally fair.

DA - I'm 100% with you about Elementary being extremely boring.

My interest in procedurals and the episode-of-the-week format was on its last legs when Elementary started airing, which was part of it. I also just found the writing extremely mediocre. But like, exasperatingly mediocre, not fun mediocre.

YMMV, ofc.

Yup. I fully acknowledge that early-seasons Sherlock was a hot mess of fluke wins and false promises, but in the early days all those flukes and bluffs were pretty damn fun. Until it became obvious it was nothing but flukes and bluffs all the way down. :(

OP
Exactly! I was getting bored of this format and Elementary's writing is... OK. Characters are good, but they are not enough for me to be interested.

At first Sherlock was exciting and then you get to the point that it goes nowhere at all. And all this excitement was for nothing

Hmmmm. I definitely like it, but it also definitely very much falls into the familiar cadence of a US network crime procedural. With some of the storylines about stuff at the precinct and the Captain Gregson storylines, and also some of the Joan personal life stuff - all of that is usually stuff that we've seen many times before.

I think where the show excels is that, one, the mysteries themselves are usually well-done and often a little more weird and out there. And two, the character of Sherlock himself is phenomenal and his storylines in particular are pretty consistently really good.

Half of my love for SH is the setting, so this show was a write off to me from the beginning. Although tbh most settings are more interesting than modern day America anyway.

Yep. I had a number of people suggest this to me because they knew I like Sherlock Holmes. I usually gave a “oh I’ll have to check it out” sort of response, but I had to start telling family flat out that I was not interested. Sherlock Holmes as a crime procedural in modern day USA? Hard pass.

Yes, the characters are a product of their time and place and I don't see how it's possible to change both without losing the essence of the thing. That was one of the problems of BBC Sherlock for me, once the novelty had worn off.

/currently re-watching Granada Holmes and loving every second of it

BBC Sherlock was about the worst adaptation of any character I've ever seen.

I liked it better than BC Sherlock but I got mad and stopped watching when Holmes said "feminazi" in the second season.

I think I would have loved it if the seasons were shorter. I can't get into American shows with super long seasons—it always seems like there's too much filler.

Aw, I loved this show. Nothing really gripping and not much in the way of ongoing story arcs, but sometimes that's good. Nothing wrong with a show that is just kind of relaxing fun. Not everything can be all cliffhangers and edge-of-your-seat. Not everything should.

Also, I adore Joan and Sherlock's friendship. I appreciated it more as the show went on.

Same. I absolutely hate that they turned SH into a run of the mill US network procedural.
