Sometimes I get the feeling that a ship writer has a kink for polyamory and is "acting" it out with characters they personally have the hots for/project onto, rather than actually putting any thought into whether it would work with those specific characters

I only really noticed this with A Thing of Vikings, since it otherwise attempts to have decent characterization. Other OT3 fics I’ve read either made the OT3 work, or didn’t feel fundamentally different from two-person PWP.

Uh, duh. TMI, perhaps, but some of the best sexual encounters I've ever had have been M/F/M. I do write my OT3s more slashy than I've seen IRL, though, which has been more like "no dicks touch" stuff.
