Like 90% of ships 2, 3, 4, + people don't make sense in regards to characterization or context.

There have been exactly two instances where an OT3 works for me, where it was suggested and I thought about the canon and went "...Huh, yeah, actually that seems like it could work."

Every other time I've seen an OT3, it seems like I'm not even sure why any TWO of the three characters would get together with each other, let alone all three. So I kinda get you there. (Obviously with a good writer who has a good plot, I'm not going to say that they could never ever make any given throuple work, and sometimes even if it doesn't make sense it can be kind of amusing, but that's... often not the case.)

Sometimes I get the feeling that a ship writer has a kink for polyamory and is "acting" it out with characters they personally have the hots for/project onto, rather than actually putting any thought into whether it would work with those specific characters

I love threesomes and OT3s, but I only ship them where I think they work for the characters. I'm usually down with PWPs of whatever, but for actual romance and long-term relationship plotting, I want the characterization to make sense.

I do agree that there can be some smug superiority with some people. Just as there are some slashers who act like they are doing great things for the LGBT community by shipping male characters together.

Hard agree. You get that moral superiority element with loads of pairing types though - ace, trans, aro, ot3, any pairing where neither of them are white. I think it's just that people are obnoxious as fuck.

Same. I've no issue with the concept of OT3s/polyamory in and of itself, and I can definitely see where there would be some characters for whom that setup would work.

But yeah, no, it's not going to be the magical solution to EVERY single situation involving ship A/B and A/C, or whatever. It's fine to just multi-ship, too, or stick with whichever pairing one has a particular preference for.

A good OT3 is exponentially harder to pull off than a OTP. If you're writing an OTP, you have 2 characters to get right, and the dynamic between them. If you're writing an OT3, you have 3 characters to get right, you have the AB dynamic, the AC dynamic, the BC dynamic, *and* the ABC dynamic. Much more opportunity for people to screw something up.

Most of my threesome ships are 100% porn ships because I like that as a smut thing, for actual OT3's that I legit ship I have very few because finding three characters who could actually work as a couple is incredibly difficult, there's usually a massive emotional imbalance within the canon for one of the ships that makes is really hard for me to see it working out as a proper poly relationship. Like most of the time two of the characters care way more for each other than they do the fandom tag-along so I just can't get into it emotionally.

Eh. Seeing a bunch of bad takes on a thing can sour anybody.

For me, it's... partly I don't like seeing people left out? And partly that if I'm building a ship off canonical friendship interactions, well. People are generally friends with more than one person.

Also, I'm a multishipper, so there's a lot of... playing around with combinations.

It's the reverse for me - I've seen so many people make a stink about OT3s that I'm now into them in part out of pettiness. A lot of people hate polyamory with a passion both in and out of fandom and it's tiring how rare it is to have a conversation about OT3s without someone crying foul over the threesome in question.

I like OT3s/4s/mores when I multiship and don't want to cut daydreams mid stream for a different pairing.

Polyamory is complicated and takes a ton of work and communication in ways that fic often leaves out. I respect those relationships and I respect shippers who don't want monogamy to be the only option. But I've only seen it done well in fic a few times. The porn can be very fun but the relationship stuff dosent carry as well.

oof, agree. I tried to watch this on the plane and it felt so joyless and mopey I ended up skipping forward through most of it. Peter Dinklage did some good emoting, but that was about it.

I haven't watched it for a few years and I'm sad to hear it was cancelled too, it was one of my fave 'watch when I feel down' kind of shows because it was so silly and rolled into that in a way I found super fun. I'll finish up the rest of the show at some point but it's sad to know it's not going to have a proper ending when I do.
