Like 90% of ships 2, 3, 4, + people don't make sense in regards to characterization or context.

There have been exactly two instances where an OT3 works for me, where it was suggested and I thought about the canon and went "...Huh, yeah, actually that seems like it could work."

Every other time I've seen an OT3, it seems like I'm not even sure why any TWO of the three characters would get together with each other, let alone all three. So I kinda get you there. (Obviously with a good writer who has a good plot, I'm not going to say that they could never ever make any given throuple work, and sometimes even if it doesn't make sense it can be kind of amusing, but that's... often not the case.)

Yeah but there's a particular brand of smug superiority that goes along with some of the louder threesome shipping, that you don't see as much with 2 person ships as a shipping demographic. It's kinda similar to the brand of smug superiority that some poly people aim at monogamists (not all poly people, just the loud ones who seem to make it the sum total of their personality.) Sometimes I wonder if those two things are directly correlated

Sometimes I get the feeling that a ship writer has a kink for polyamory and is "acting" it out with characters they personally have the hots for/project onto, rather than actually putting any thought into whether it would work with those specific characters

Those also suck, but people (at least ime) are much less likely to act like they're better than other shippers for pulling *that* crap

If Mat is considered problematic, I'm surprised he's not the main character in fics, tbh.

I only really noticed this with A Thing of Vikings, since it otherwise attempts to have decent characterization. Other OT3 fics I’ve read either made the OT3 work, or didn’t feel fundamentally different from two-person PWP.

TBH I'm not totally sure what OP has in mind with Mat being problematic and I kind of assumed they were talking about the weird situation with his actor being recast for reasons unknown.

I love threesomes and OT3s, but I only ship them where I think they work for the characters. I'm usually down with PWPs of whatever, but for actual romance and long-term relationship plotting, I want the characterization to make sense.

I do agree that there can be some smug superiority with some people. Just as there are some slashers who act like they are doing great things for the LGBT community by shipping male characters together.

Hard agree. You get that moral superiority element with loads of pairing types though - ace, trans, aro, ot3, any pairing where neither of them are white. I think it's just that people are obnoxious as fuck.

Same. I've no issue with the concept of OT3s/polyamory in and of itself, and I can definitely see where there would be some characters for whom that setup would work.

But yeah, no, it's not going to be the magical solution to EVERY single situation involving ship A/B and A/C, or whatever. It's fine to just multi-ship, too, or stick with whichever pairing one has a particular preference for.
