If Mat is considered problematic, I'm surprised he's not the main character in fics, tbh.

TBH I'm not totally sure what OP has in mind with Mat being problematic and I kind of assumed they were talking about the weird situation with his actor being recast for reasons unknown.

Yehhhhhhh. I think the fandom will probably get bigger as the series goes on; as it stands, the amount of material from the TV show is still so minuscule compared to the book. And the show has not gotten to the coolest parts of the book series yet. So I think it'll be interesting to see how that goes.

At the same time, I don't know if it's ever going to have a super shippy fandom. For one thing, the series and its relationships are fairly heterosexual. There are a few exceptions to that, they've already taken one of those and expanded on it and I would imagine they'll continue doing stuff like that, but I think a lot of the DNA of the series makes it tricky to do so. I don't think it's ever going to be a series that's deeply imbued with slash shippiness. And then from a het point of view, most of the relationships don't seem like the kinds of relationships that get a lot of popularity with het shippers at the present time. I guess Logain stuff, maybe. But IDK.

Canon het-ness never stopped slash shippers before.

That's fair. But it's not just that the characters are canonically het. It feels like the whole narrative is set up that way. I mean - for example, there are plenty of stories where all the characters are nominally het, but where most of the meat of the story and the deepest relationships are the relationships between the male characters, while love interests and female characters are presented perfunctorily or not at all.

That's really not the case in WOT. Love interests and romantic drama is a big part of every character's storyline and Jordan devotes significant time to those romantic relationships, even ones involving side characters. And those romantic relationships tend to become defining parts of those characters.
